    cataract in rabbit's eye?

I went out to feed the rabbits this evening and noticed that one of the bucks has a partially clouded eye. He's less than a year old. He seems happy, active, and eating and drinking fine. Is this something I need to worry about? Is there some way I can treat it? I might be able to put up a...

Wazine or Safeguard for worms? What about pigeons and ducks?

After a long conversation with the family member at TSC about different types of fenbendazole and piperazine, we called up a neighbor of ours who happens to have the liquid goat Safeguard. She says it's a year old, but it's been kept in the fridge and hasn't passed its expiration date. We're...

Wazine or Safeguard for worms? What about pigeons and ducks?

Sorry for posting AGAIN about such a "popular" topic, but I did have some questions that I can't find the answer to. Today, a family member discovered a worm in a chicken dropping. I didn't see said dropping, but those who did and saw Internet photos say it's a roundworm. Their description...

noone is responding to my post why is mom hen not being a mom

After a certain point, mother hens will no longer accept new chicks - particularly chicks of a different age than their own. It can be dangerous to put newly hatched chicks with older chicks, because brand new babies need to sleep under mom for most of the day and night, while older chicks just...

    Spur removal gone wrong

About two days a spur removal was attempted on our big BR rooster. Per online instructions, pliers were used to gently twist off each spur. The instructions said that in their experience, 1) there was just a nub under each spur and 2) there was just one drop of blood under each spur. However, we...

    URGENT: gangrene? *GRAPHIC*

Okay, thanks. Will see about the citric acid. She's doing really well. So far we're keeping her away from the other chickens so her scab can heal up without getting scratched, but otherwise she's back to normal. The medicated water isn't always available to her but I'm trying to give some to...

    URGENT: gangrene? *GRAPHIC*

The skin has, for the most part, turned pink again with a slightly greenish tint. I'm glad to see she's getting better. The wound itself has a thick, ugly black scab over it, but it's looking good. She slept in the empty rabbit hutch last night and was pacing behind the door this morning, so I...

No, didn't delete my images. That's what we figured about the egg. The rooster's spurs are scary anyway. Super thick and sharp. She's spent the day in our bathroom. Calm, alert; eating, drinking, and eliminating well. Still not moving around much. All the skin and more that was gray before...

    URGENT: gangrene? *GRAPHIC*

Update: Last night we found that the hen had laid an egg. It was smaller than normal and had no shell - although it did have a strange gritty coating on it, as if the shell hadn't been put on correctly. Strange. Maybe her body was so upset that it didn't make the egg correctly? Or a coincidence...

Thanks! It could have been our rooster's massive spurs... or possibly a rat. A hawk is possible, but unlikely, since this chicken is so small - I would have expected her to be carried off, unless maybe the rooster interfered.

My mom says that the "pocket" is probably exposed muscle. We had some Silkies live through a dog attack once and my mom says this is similar to how they looked. She's eaten some bread soaked in Duramycin-10 solution. Very eager to eat.

    URGENT: gangrene? *GRAPHIC*

She was sitting on a nest a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday I saw her nesting outside the nestbox again. She's an OEGB and they seem to be prone to making nests anywhere and everywhere - all the time.

    URGENT: gangrene? *GRAPHIC*

Definitely. I wasn't the one who did it... it was another member of the household who thought they had it all under control. :rant Okay. I rinsed off the wound, only to find it looking very different than it did this morning. It looks like the muscle is exposed, but dried over. The leg is a...

However, this is what the Duramycin says about chickens: "FOR CHICKENS: INDICATIONS Control of chronic respiratory disease (CRD air sac disease) caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Escherichia coli, infectious synovitis caused by Mycoplasma synoviae susceptible to tetracycline...

We bought the Duramycin for our duck when her eye was badly infected (think terrible rotting smell) from a predator attack. She lost her eye, but the infection cleared up within a few days. So would it work for this chicken too? I think the wound is mostly closed up. I'll need to look at her again.

I definitely do not feel comfortable with cutting her open. I think I'm going to have to use peroxide. She seems so ... *okay* now - I would just feel awful if I killed her by trying to help. Should I use the Duramycin-10? That's all I have. (If she lives through this, would we be able to eat...

Thanks. Don't think we have any betadine - just peroxide. :( I have Duramycin-10 powder on hand, as well as triple antibiotic and Blu-Kote. BTW, the wound itself looks so nasty partially because it's all sticky and wet with the antibiotic ointment. Sorry I couldn't get a good photo of the...
