Hi! We have 3 Standard Brahma's that need to be re-homed. They are all gorgeous and decent layers. 1 Buff Brahma, 1 Dark Brahma, and 1 Light Brahma. I just delivered a newborn and we are overwelmed and can not give our chickens the care that they need. Must prioritize our baby. We also...
Hi!
I've been on BYC for some time now, but we're finally getting our eggs! It seems like we've been waiting forever and now the girls are stepping up to the plate and I have lots of silly questions. If anyone knows of a stickypost somewhere that explains the basics: please send the link, I...
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PAGE IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AS I FIGURE OUT HOW TO 'MAKE' IT AND ADD PHOTOS, ETC. PLEASE BEAR WITH ME, I'LL REMOVE THIS NOTE ONCE I'M HAPPY WITH IT.
Greetings! This is Cindy M, aka: greenpixies. My husband and I currently live in northwest Louisiana in the...
Dear "Cass"
Thank you sooooooooooo much for your insights and support!!!
Although I've neglected the gurls and boys somewhat since the weather got yukky, I really do love them all. I feel that if they aren't ready to to lay, I can understand and can be very patient.
Unfortunately the coop...
I know it's been asked a zillion times... now it's my turn.
O.K. We are newbies. This is our first flock. We ended up with: 4 Easter Egger Hens, 3 Standard Brahma Hens, 4 Silkie Hens and 3 Silkie Roo's. They are ALL 27 weeks old as of yesterday. In my book that equals almost 7 months old...
Hi!
We bought one during the summer when our first (and only) brood was rapidly expanding and we realized that our dream to build our own was going to have to wait. I have mixed feelings about the whole experience. I think your choice must factor in how many chickens you have and where you...
O.K. Everyone, hold on.....!
I see that no one took my word about our pen being predator proof. I should have explained the how and why, instead of just stating how proud of myself I was. All y'all know is that I am a newbie, so I understand all the concern about whether it really is predator...
Hi, new to all this, but loving every minute!
So here is my situation:
I have a mixed flock of Silkies, Standard Brahmas and EE's. They are all 11 weeks old. Obviously nothing laying yet. FOR NOW, and at least the next couple of months they are living in a 10x10 outdoor chainlink dog kennel...
Hi! I just reviewed this thread and had a question:
I am a newbie. My flock is only 11 weeks old, so several weeks/months away from laying yet. I just started them on their 'finisher' feed and I plan to add oyster shell once they start to lay. I have been supplementing with chick grit since...
dear teach1rusl:
I am also a newbie and have been searching high and low within the forums for help sexing Silkies. Your response with photos has been the most helpful I've seen! Thank you so much!
Now that we know that you are an expert, here's some more questions:
1. Do the wattles hang...
Hi!
My 6+ week old standards (Brahmas + Easter Eggers) have been outside for the first day today. The pen is always at least 50% shade, often more. They seemed fine the first few hours. Last time I checked on them they were panting heavily and all crowded together huddled in a corner. After...
Thanks needtohatch!
I am used to breaking them up in to crumbles and peices as you described. I wanted to double check that it was safe for the chicks! Fabulous!
:DHi!
My 14 chicks (6 weeks old) will be moving outside tomorrow. I have been concerned about insects and have not been able to find much info about this. Here is what I understand so far: chicks and chickens enjoy eating various insects.
O.K., that said, here are a bunch of my newbie...
Hi!
The chicks will be moving outside tomorrow. I will be switching to a metal 2 gallon double wall water font which I intend to hang a few inches from the ground.
We're in Louisiana and have serioius mosquito problems. Does anyone know if it's o.k. to use those B.T. donut shaped dunks in...
well, featherbaby:
let us know when they arrive and how they work! Best of luck to you and your girls!
we're trying to hang in here in similar climate: louisiana.
I'm not actually sure what type of bark that is, I think it varies regionally. But it is commonly referred to as 'bark nuggets'. It's used as a mulch and available at nearly any garden center, including big-box places like home depot's and Loews.
Lots of people on BYC use it and I haven't...
:)Everyone's got such great ideas!
I'm so glad that I asked!
I feel like we have a much better chance of protecting our girls now. We're extra nervous because we are leaving for a long weekend and only have someone to check on them once a day, which means the coop will be open (inside our...
:)mothrhen:
I don't think that it would harbor bacteria to any detrimental level, bark dries out very quickly. Unless you are keeping things really wet in your run/pen area bacteria is more of a problem with 'wet' and 'soft' stuff. I've used barks in many horticultural projects and they are...
