We have 7 chickens and 5 are now laying. This morning, one egg was found without a shell...membrane and insides, but no shell. They are eating a Purina brand laying crumble mix that has the calcium and grit all incorporated in the feed. Is this normal for the young layers or ones trying out...
Now that our girls are laying, some eggs are biger than others, which we expected due to the types of chickens we have. But some of these eggs are so small! I think they are coming from the EEs, but we have small white ones, too. Do they start out small and get any bigger? Or are they as big...
No real concern, but I have two (I think) girls who go into the hutch and lay their eggs, but they lay them on the floor rather than one of the nesting boxes we have for them to use. Everyone else has figured it out. They are newly laying, within the last 3 or 4 weeks.
...lay their eggs at around the same time each day as one another, or will each of the girls continue laying their eggs throughout the day? We are collecting eggs three or four times a day. Is that normal?
SSASQ (sorry such a stupid question), but I was just curious.
Okay, 4 of our 7our girls have started laying - six weeks sooner than we thought! So now I have a few questions...
1) Do the eggs start small and get bigger after a while? Reason I ask is I am getting some pretty small eggs. I have 2 Easter Eggers and I knew some of our layers would lay some...
We have 7 six-week olds and they are now outside in their coop. It's the doll house type coop with a roost box and then the run is underneath. They still have their heat lamp out in the roost box and the door is slid shut, but I am worried that tonight will really make them cold. It is...

I was told a mottled Ancona. Not sure. She looks somewhat like an Ancona, but has a little too much white. She came from the assorted pullet bin at the feed store.
I have the same kind, bought under the same circumstances, too! I narrowed it down to the Ancona as well - narrowed it...
Here is my 3-week old diverse flock They are (from top clockwise) Buff Orpinton, 2 Easter Eggers, Barred Rock, Australorp, Ancona, and our Rhode Island Red:
WANT! WANT! WANT! I want to do this!
We have seven young ladies who wont be ready to lay until August or so. Can we still be put on the list?
2 Americaunas - Lucy and Penny
1 Barred Rock - Miss Jimmer
1 Buff Orpington - Hop
1 Australorp - Anakin (Ani)
1 Rhode Island Red - Obi wan Kenobi...
Hi, Jay!!!! Welcome to the club I am in Orem, and we have seven little babies. They are only a week and a half old so it will be some time before they start laying eggs. We are in the process of STARTING to build our coop, too. It's cool you are in PG - Maria is in Orem, too. We have a...
A Utah thread! I'm here from Orem, smack-dab in the middle of Happy Valley We have recently gotten an ordinance passed that allows us to have up to 6 chickens for eggs only (no roosters, thankfully) so we took advantage of this opportunity. We got our little girls this last Friday and the...
