    goose pairs question

When geese are sold as a pair, are those two from different parents (or are they supposed to be and you hope they really are)?

    Gosling question

I'm planning on ordering a pair of day-old goslings in the spring, so I've started studying up on them now. Do you handle them pretty much the same as baby chicks, or differently? Do they need those same temp requirements and all? I'm planning on ordering some chicks at the same time, but I...

    use up egg yolks?

I made an angel food cake the other day, and it called for 2 cups of egg whites. That took 16 of my somewhat smallish eggs. So now I have 16 egg yolks floating in a container of milk. Got any good recipes that call for yolks and not whites? Guess I could make hubby some chocolate pudding to...

    eating mosquitoes

This is probably a dumb question, but if a mosquito bites me, or anybody else for that matter, and has blood in it, and a chicken eats it, will it do anything bad to the chicken? And no, I don't mean turn it into a killer chicken that has a taste for human blood!!

    Christmas shopping...

I was thinking the other day, that surely there are a lot of people here who have home-based businesses, or otherwise sell gift-type items online. I know I will be buying some more of Trisha's soaps for gifts. But it would be great if we could all do some of our Christmas shopping from...

    How to disinfect the run

After reading AZMamas post about the necropsy, and dlhunicorn's response about disinfecting, I was wondering what is the best way to disinfect the run? Inside the house I can figure out, but not outside. Would you maybe put the 1:10 bleach solution in a garden sprayer and hose it down while the...

    shared eggs yesterday

Guess what? I gave away my first dozen surplus eggs yesterday! An acquaintance called me and asked if I had any use for some pears, because her neighbor lady gave her 10 BAGS! I had just been wishing for some the other day, so of course I said yes. When I went to pick 'em up, I took her a...

Woohoo! Birthday presents ** Updated **

My husband is getting my beehive for my birthday!!! I'm getting so excited about this. I'm taking the plunge, too - decided I want to get it unassembled so I can assemble it myself because I need to learn that kind of stuff. We found a supplier in Moultrie, but I have to find out where that...

    tin roof and lightning

Hey, I just had a thought. My chicken house is under a huge pecan tree, and has a tin roof. I was just out there with them, and a thunderstorm is just starting. I never thought about it before, but do y'all think there's much chance of them getting hit by lightning?

    The beauty of wireless!

This is great! I'm in my yard, watching my chickens scratching around, eating grass, having a grand old time, and at the same time, I'm in my lawn chair with the laptop reading about everybody else's chickens! Oh technology!

    No more whining from me!

At long last, after 20 weeks, Pearl (finally) layed the first egg today! Yay!!!! It was about an inch and a half long, creamy white, with a nice hard shell. It's in my fridge now. She even layed it in one of the nest boxes! I was/am so proud of her! Eight more 'first eggs' to go! I'm so...

Can you see your chickens from the house?

I have to be the luckiest mom in the world... DH built my chicken coop directly outside my bedroom window, about 40 ft (I guess, not good at that) from the house, so first thing when I wake up, I open the blinds, and there are the girls! I'm able to do a lot of my work from home, so today I've...

What kind of snakes will hurt chickens?

We've seen a black snake and a corn snake so far in our yard so far this year. I've read stories of them getting in chickencoops, but other than eating eggs, are they any other danger?

    Garden updates.....let's hear yours!

HI! Was just wondering, how are everyone's gardens doing now? My cukes are done. We had enough to eat, share, and make 11.5 qts of pickles from one row. I can live with that! I yanked up the vines, threw down more mulch and replanted the space with bush beans and sunflowers this past...

    Nematodes....good news!

I was just reading my newest issue of Countryside Magazine, and there's an article in there about nematodes in the garden. The best way to get rid of them is compost, and guess what?? There is beneficial bacteria and fungus in the compost, especially if it contains rabbit or chicken manure...
