I'm thinking about ordering some more chicks....I really want some bantam barred plymouth rock chicks. Has anyone here ordered from purely poultry or another online site? What was your experience?

I was the one who was had to talk DH into raising hens........

AND now he keeps talking about getting more! LOL! I guess he has gotten bit with the bug! He just loves them. I'm so glad. I thought this was going to be mainly my endeavor, but he is really taking over. Too funny!

10 day old bantam chciks fighting over roost

I propped a long <1/4 diameter branch in the brooder today mainly just out of curiousity. I really didn't think these lil gals would be ready to roost yet. Boy was I wrong. These 2 are knocking each other off for the "good" spot! It is too funny! I thought the would start trying to roost till...

    all four babies gone now

I am sooooo sorry for your loss. This is a good lesson for a lot of us newbies, to make sure that we really make sure we know what predators are out there. I'm going to have to do some more research into the snakes in my region. My grandparents mentioned losing a lot of chicks to them.

Going outside for a little while

Those of you who have let your littles out, what type of chicks do you have? I have been thinking about doing the same this weekend. They are 10 days old today. It should get up to around 70 this weekend, but I have assorted bantams so mine are tinys!!! So I wasn't sure if they were too small.

Cracked Corn as Treat for 10 day old Chicks?

I was thinking about throwing about 2 tablespoons of cracked corn in the brooder for my 2 bantam chicks. If I do this do I need to put any grit in there too? Just curious? I want to give the wee ones a lil treat.

Brand New to BYC - My first Flock! Please come say hello!

Quote: My 2 (hopefully ) gals are residing in the bathroom as well! Seems like a good spot for them! Quick question, I know pullet means, girls, so how are they sexed at 2 weeks? Mine are just bantams so they are insanely tiny. They were a week on Monday.

Is there anyway ( TSC ?)

I bought my chicks at TSC, convinced them to sell me 4 instead of 6. Mainly because I explained to the girl my coop plans our for 4 birds not 6. But now that I've lost 2, should have bought 6...hmmm...... It seemed to just be a discussion between the cashiers whether they would sell me 4 or...

    Thanks for the awesome info!

Thanks for the awesome information! I think not being able to get away from the heat was definitely the problem for my babies. I purchased a 50 gallon tote from Walmart last night and moved them in there. Set up the red lamp in one corner and put the feeder and waterer in the middle. The...

Yo baby Yogurt for 1 week old chicks

Bedding is pine shavings on top of an old towel. I have been changing the shavings once a day. I took the yogurt away from them until I could get on here and get some solid advice about what people thought and who had tried it before.

Yo baby Yogurt for 1 week old chicks

Thanks so much for the replies! They can get wet in the waterer. I have seen them get in there some. I am going to stop and get a new thermometer on my way home from work today. The one I was using wasn't very reliable. They are on 20% starter/grower and drinking lots of fresh water. I...

Yo baby Yogurt for 1 week old chicks

Looking at the pics, they do look like they are trying to hug the sides of the brooder, but that is because they are just trying to get away from my obnoxiously large camera.

Yo baby Yogurt for 1 week old chicks

My assorted bantams from Tractor Supply were hatched last Monday. I purchased them on Sunday, March 27. I have lost 2 of my 4 chicks. They are eating well. They seem to be very comfortable with the temperature. No crowding around the lamp or pushing against the edges of the brooder...

Brand new to BYC - First Flock is 1 Week old!

I am a 28 year old wife and mother of 2. I have recently become very interested in the idea of sustainable farming. I have always grown up with animals, taking in strays, and growing up on my grandparents farm. I am passionate about what I put into my family's and my own bodies. That is just...

Brand New to BYC - My first Flock! Please come say hello!

I'm very excited I have got my first set of baby chicks. I purchased 4 unsexed bantams from tractor supply co. I have been researching backyard chicken raising for a while, jumped through some homeowner assn hoops, and was able to obtain a small brood for my fam! We set up a brooder in the...
