Emu vs. Chicken, not a fair fight

After several years together, our lone remaining emu did something unexpected this morning. He/She is a couple of years old, the only one we've ever hatched on the property, Hubby's love - we thought it was a female (not very vocal but no hissing, maybe thumped once) but then he/she built a...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

My eggs are at 13 days, and I am only able to candle the white ones ... is this something I should do now to keep bad gases from bad eggs out (something I read on another group) or just wait until days 21/22 and do it then? We have a Brinsea Mini Advanced, I'm keeping the water level correct...

Is it too late to add supplemental light?

We had planned to forego the artificial light this winter, but alas we are down to 0-2 eggs per day from 18 layers .... is it too late to add light? If not, what kind of delay should we expect before production picks up again? Thanks!

Getting ready to call Colonel Sanders

We're getting 2 eggs a day (with one 3 egg day last week) one in the morning and one in the afternoon -- I'm guessing they're from our Reds that were hatched 3/17 (25 weeks). The reds have nice red combs and wattles, while the Speckled Sussex of the same age have almost none. I swear we need...

Laying throughout the day .... normal?

We've got at least 4 birds laying, and we're getting eggs throughout the day. Is there any way to get them to all lay in the morning? I worry about the temperatures in the heat of the day and whether the eggs are still okay to eat ....

How do you ever leave home?

Quote: Hmmm, and I already promised myself I wouldn't add to the flock next spring .... oh well, I don't think anyone believed me anyhow :-) You should get yourself an incubator or broody hen - I sell hatching eggs. I've often thought of an incubator -- we especially wanted one when we had...

How do you ever leave home?

Quote: Thank you Krissteff, I was thinking of looking for a service to let the pups out for a mid-day break while my oldest son is at work - he lives very close by and can do early mornings and early evenings .... but has little to no experience with the chickens .... I call them tomorrow --...

How do you ever leave home?

Thank you. I think Hubs agrees and just hasn't said so yet.

How do you ever leave home?

We're trying to go away for 5 days (Hubs and I, together, alone, oh my heavens) for the first time since we got chickens in early March. He does morning animal duty and I take evening. Oh the preparations involved. Maybe this is why farmers didn't usually travel a lot. I've ordered the motor...

Our first week of eggs .... just one chicken or more .... don't know?

We're super curious (Hubby has mysteriously grown interested in "my" chickens) -- but there are 7 twenty-three week olds and another 10 that are 17-18 weeks .... so soon the task would become too much ..... Another egg today, so we're getting one egg a day for the last 5 days .... but today's...

Our first week of eggs .... just one chicken or more .... don't know?

Yay -- I told my husband I need a peep window so I can tell who's doing what -- I asked Tractor Supply for Rhode Island Reds, but have since found out that I got "production" reds, which from what I gather can be Rhode Island or New England .... or a combination thereof? Anyone more educated is...

Our first week of eggs .... just one chicken or more .... don't know?

The eggs are as pictured left to right - last Monday, Wednesday and Friday, then Saturday, Sunday, Monday and today. The first was in the run, so I put golf balls in the nest boxes and every one after that has been in the same nest box. My oldest 7 girls are 23 weeks old - 4 production reds...

    Avian Aqua Miser?!?!

I've been using the Avian Aquas for about 3 months now and am thrilled with the results -- the chickens learned to drink from the nipples within a day, stay well hydrated and best of all, no more nasty waterers to clean out :-)
