2 Grandpa's Treadle Feeders for Sale, So Cal, Hemet area

I have two Grandpa's Feeders for sale. They are in good used condition. They just didn't work well for our situation, I am asking $50 each. They are well over $150 new. This is a good opportunity to try one if you have been wanting one. I am in southern California in the mountains above...

    Artificial Turf???

When I built my coop, I made 1 small mistake. Instead of putting one window horizontally and up high over the external nest boxes, I put two windows vertically right above the external nest boxes. So that means that the lids of the nest boxes are not slopped enough to keep the chickens from...

What's the one thing you wish you had included in your coop?

The one thing I wish I could have in my coop is a brooder. But we don't have a lot of space and I had to keep the size of my coop down in order for it to fit in the covered run. Other than that, I am pretty darn happy with my coop. It has been in use for a year and a half now and works pretty...

What type of fan works best inside coop?

Same here. We were very limited as to where we could put our coop and the west side gets more sun than I would like it to. We have planted several trees, but it will be a few years until they are large enough to shade the run. Last year I bought shade cloth and put it over the whole west side...

Anyone Use This Automatic Treadle Chicken Feeder?

They sound like very lucky dogs!

Anyone Use This Automatic Treadle Chicken Feeder?

Wow, 18 dogs! I can barely manage my two. If I don't like using the pans I will try those bucket feeders where they have to stick their heads in to get the food.

Anyone Use This Automatic Treadle Chicken Feeder?

Good luck with whatever you decide. I took mine out of the coop today and will probably be selling them. I am just using pans for now as they don't seem to fling as much out of those as they do the feeders . Plus when it rains, even though they are in a covered run, the food was still getting...

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

I know. No one was up there yet this morning. I have one long piece laying on top of the nest box lids with the ribbing running horizontally, which I think they could still stand on if they chose to. I am planning to attach it with the ribs running vertically and hoping they will slide off if...

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

I must lead a sheltered life cause I have never noticed anything like this. I will start looking up from now on. LOL!! Thanks. I am hoping my fiberglass panels deter them enough that I won't have to take extreme measures!

Anyone Use This Automatic Treadle Chicken Feeder?

Personally I wouldn't waste my money. I have been using two of these for over a year now and frankly, they don't save much if anything. The chickens still fling their food out and each week I have to remove the feeders and clean up the mess underneath them. Food also collects in the sides of...

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

So I just went out and locked them up for the night. No one has gotten up on the fiberglass sheet. I will leave it there for a few days and see if that does the trick. If it works, I can just cut it to fit the lids and screw it on without having to remove the lids or cut anything up!!!

I never heard of bird spikes before. I wonder if I could still open the lids with those on there?? Seems like it sure would keep them off. LOL!!!

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

This is what I am doing currently but it is gross! And the poop keeps falling down behind the lid and then into the nest boxes. Keeping them off in the first place would be a better solution overall I think.

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

You know what? I just had another thought. I have some old louvered doors that could be cut down lengthwise to fit on the top of the nest boxes. The would be a bit too wide which means I could leave them partially folded. I wonder if that would deter them or if they would look at it as a...

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

That's a good idea. I did go out and lay a piece of corregated fiberglass on top of the lids just to see if that deters them. It would be far easier to just make new lids that they don't sit on than to cut out the front panels because we could just remove the wooden top and attach whatever...

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

Just hinged on the sides and open out like cupboard doors. Or I could hinge them on the bottom to open down, or just replace the tops with metal roofing???? I am so mad at myself for not catching this before it was built. Otherwise, I still love it.

Coop anniversary, design flaws & modifications

Well my girls have been in their new coop for a little over a year now. While I mostly love it, I have discovered that I made a design flaw. In my enthusiasm to use all 4 of the vintage windows I had saved from an old cabin that was demolished, I designed the front of the coop with two windows...
