    Automatic Coop Door Openers

I have read about devices to automatically open chicken coop doors into the run in the morning and close them at night. Is there anyone here with experiences with these? Where are they available? How do the chickens know to go inside before the device closes the door?

How long do chicks need to be under a light?

My chicks are going on 5 weeks and have begun to feather out well. Here in Michigan, our daytime temps are in the 60s and our nighttime temps in the 40s. I have been leaving the light on 24 hours but they now ignore it during the day and spend most of their time in the run. At night, they...

i think my chicks hate me!!!

I have TSC chicks as well, about 5 weeks old, like yours. Like you said, I have a a half dozen that will come near me and peck my feet when I'm being still. Yet, they'll freak out if I try to pick them up from any angle. I've noticed a big difference in the breeds. My Barred Rocks seem the...

Is it really a NY state law???

See subsection 3 in New York State Law Section. 354 § 354. Sale of baby chicks and baby rabbits. 1. No person shall sell, offer for sale, barter or give away living baby chicks, ducklings or other fowl or baby rabbits unless such person provides proper brooder facilities where...

Is it really a NY state law???

I think these are excellent laws which prohibit people from purchasing just one or two chicks or ducklings. Given the very low price of purchasing just one or two chicks and how cute they are when they are small, there is a very real temptation for people who have no knowledge of how to care...

    First Day Outside Deaths

First time chicken owner here. It's been a warm sunny day in southern Michigan so I let my 3+ week old chicks outside for the first time today to explore their run. They were nervous but eventually the more timid ones came out no doubt inspired by the happy chirps of the braver ones who were...

Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance

I purchased new and just finished reading Martin Gurdon's Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance: Reflections on Raising Chickens. Which is better..A covered run or not?

I use a deer fencing to cover the top. It will keep out hawks and is very inexpensive. Snow hasn't been a problem but an ice storm could be. I have a tree in my run which provides shade. That could be an alternative to covering it.

    HOW MUCH TO STARTER BUY?

How many chicks are you getting? I have 18 chicks. I bought a 20 lb. bag. During the first week I thought I would have plenty left over. A week later, I realize I should have bought the 50 lbs. bag. All they do is eat, sleep, eat, play, eat, drink, and eat. My chicks eat like pigs, not...

Letting people have roosters, opinions please

From the little I know about cockfighting, it's a high stakes form of gambling. The don't use just any roosters, but ones specifically bred for fighting just as we breed chickens for egg laying, meat, or show. So, unless these people are hillbillies, they probably won't be using your non-game...

I'm a bit down the road in Marshall, MI. Do you know anywhere I can buy organic chicken feed in the Lansing area or in Southwest Michigan? I haven't been able to find it at TSC or Soldan's.

    chickens in subdivision???

I live on a double city lot. My property is 200' by 50'. I have 18 chicks and plan on keeping five hens and a rooster. My city law allows me to have chickens (including roosters) as long as the coop and run is located more than 50' from a neighbor's dwelling unless the neighbors give me...

Getting your chicks to like you

Thanks for the help everyone! I bought some mealworms on the way home from work. Within less than a minute I had one of my Barred Rock chicks eating out of my hand. Soon others joined to the point where the chicks were fighting over access to my hand! I was surprised to see how breed...
