White Leghorns
Rhode Island Reds
Golden Comets
Buff Orpingtons
I'm not 100 set on the above breeds so if you have anything available, please reply and I'll look into the breed.

Good point... more boxes, more eggs. How will I ever decide? I might as well have more than needed at this point since everyone has a different opinion. I don't want to have too few, that's for sure.
How high can a chicken jump on average? I ask this in case I will be needing a fence for my vegetable garden. I read that clipping their flight feathers can help?
Roughly how many lbs of feed will I go through a week with 5 adult hens? I read that some people keep feed available at all times. In this case how fast do you think it would be consumed?
I've read a lot about how good chickens are at keeping the bug-level down - how safe is it to allow hens to access to your vegetable garden? What if I'm only growing pumpkin, cucumber and tomato? Has anyone had success in keeping an open garden?
How many nesting boxes is necessary? I have read several answers throughout the net. At first I thought I would need one for each hen but then learned that they will lay in the same box. Is there a general rule - for example, two hens per box? Some say 1 nest box for every 4-5 chickens.
1. This is my first time keeping chickens. What breed would you recommend to a newbie? As of right now I am thinking about having all Pearl-White Leghorns. would this be boring? I read that they lay better if they are all the same breed, true? Would I be better off with a mixed flock?
