    hot hot hot! Chickens panting

One of them scared the chicken poop outta me the other day. She was outside in the run. Fell on her side and was panting with her legs outstretched. I got the hose and lightly misted them. I thought for sure she was dying of heat exhaustion.

BIg Coops? Who has a really big coop?

The inside of my coop is 10' x 10' with 12' ceiling. Its part of an old barn structure that was on the property. The one side is a hay barn, the middle is my hubbys workshop, the front right side is my tack barn and the back right is the coop. It was built in 1924 so it needed some shoring up...

    Lights in coop

Thanks all. I ended up putting in a florescent light strip on a timer. 6am on 7:30pm off. As well as a regular light bulb for human use when cleaning in there and such. And a red 100 w heat lamp over their roost. Since the nights are a little chilly I figured they wouldnt mind the extra warmth...

    Really dumb question coming...

Yesterday was the first day my chicks are out in the coop. I live in MD too so I am worried about the same thing. I think I am going to leave them in today (the coop is 10' x 10' with 12' ceiling) to make sure they know the inside of their coop is safety and home. They are about 6 weeks old or...

    Lights in coop

What type of lights do you all use inside your coop? I am finishing up this weekend but have not yet done any lights. I am going to put the red brooder light out there for the nights right now since they are only 6 weeks or so but what do you all do for regular lights? Fluorescent? Regular bulb?

    substance on floor of coop

Our coop is an old converted shed. It currently has a dirt floor. The chicks are going to be going out there today or very very soon & I was wondering if I can leave it dirt or do I need to add pine shavings? In their brooder that are in now they have Equine Fresh pellets. Will it be safe to...

Can I transition them to the coop/run?

Quote: What type of lights do you all use for "all the time" when you dont need a heat light? Do you use florescent or still a red light?

Can I transition them to the coop/run?

I have 11 chicks that were born around 3/30. They have been in a spare bedroom in a 4' x 2' and now that the warmer temps in the house are here I have turned out the heat lamp for the past week or so - this way they get adjusted to night and day. The temp doesnt go below 72 in the room. My DH...
