    chick that can't stand

I have the exact same thing happening right now. I let my broody hatch and found two chicks this morning. She wasn't making an effort to keep them warm and one had died, so I took the other away from her. It's under a lamp now but doing the exact same thing you mention. It also looks like...

    Blasted foggy glass!

I have another one zipping! And on second look, my cochin mix now that it's fluffy is brown, not black and looking very much like his dad after all, but with furry feet. It will be interesting to see what it turns out like.

    Blasted foggy glass!

Update - Well, have two new chicks, two pipping now and two doing nothing. We are on day 23, so I'm going a little nutty. My husband and I are staying out of town tonight for one night only. I guess at some point before then I'm going to need to remove my new chicks to a brooder (they hatched...

    Blasted foggy glass!

I don't, mine is a home made bator. I will ventilate it a little and see if it clears. Thanks!

    Blasted foggy glass!

It wasn't foggy until the one started zipping, so I think it's just the humidity from that.

    Blasted foggy glass!

I'm on day 22 and finally I have a chick starting to zip and the glass is all fogged and I can't see! I know it's normal I just need something to distract me before I lose my mind. How do you distract yourself from the hatch?

For those using water heater thermostats...

I had to put it in backwards so the sensor was reading the temps better, and then the fluctuation stopped. I bent some hardware cloth to attach it to closer to the center of the incubator. HTH!

Day 21 and not a pip?

Back from my meeting and nothing new, except I have heard one peeping.

Day 21 and not a pip?

I know! I have to go to a meeting in an hour and I'm so irritated. Last night I skipped a birthday party "just in case."

Day 21 and not a pip?

I don't know. My first hatch is a little late. Today is day 22, and I do have two holes this morning, but no sound or movement, so I'm getting nervous. I'm not sure how long it usually takes from when they start to when I should worry?

    Going to build one!!!

We built one and are on day 9. We set 9 eggs and 6 are alive and growing well. 3 were discarded and I'm not sure they were fertile, they hadn't begun to grow at all. I have my fingers crossed for the six. I've had a little bit more fluctuation in temp than I'd like, but nothing drastic and...

    I did it...I butchered a chicken...and I feel mixed emotions

You will be sure not to waste the meat, since you know how hard it was to take it's life. That's how I feel... so much more respectful of the meat because I know what it was once. I was much more wasteful with store-bought meat. We always tell our son not to waste meat because an animal had to...

    Quick help?!

Thanks. We did try the dish soap. We had read to have the water around 140 and those feathers were really tough to get out, so maybe it wasn't hot enough? I think the worst part was that we used a killing cone and our first one just looked at us and then after we'd slit her throat we kind of...

    Quick help?!

Thanks! We got it done okay. The first was a nightmare but after that we figured it out and got a system down, but we did end up skinning them all. The birds we processed were not meat breeds and they were fairly small with thin skin. We just couldn't get the feathers loose enough to pull...

    Quick help?!

We don't know what we are doing. We just butchered our first chicken and since we couldn't understand the directions in the book we pretty much faked our way through it. What is the easiest way to do this. We are visual people and need pics. Any good site links? We checked out the sticky...

Cheap play house kits Layton Utah

The Lowe's in Layton utah has the playhouse kits that are usually $299 marked down to $75! We picked one up that will be our "halfway house" for our new recruits in the spring and our children's playhouse until then. I don't think you could build these from scratch for that price and they...

    Robin's egg

What ever happened? My son just found four robins eggs on our grass and one was broken. He was so worried about them! I told him we'd candle them to see if there were babies inside growing. There aren't. He insisted that we try to hatch them. I told him it won't work but he was going to...

    Cast Iron Question

Thanks for the oven cleaner tip. One of my dutch ovens got grease baked on a little thick and it flakes off. Way yuck, I've tried everything and wished I could start the seasoning over... maybe I can. I'll try that! For my frying pans I just boil them out after use usually and oil them up...

What's the most amount of corn and wheat I can supplement with?

Thank you. I hadn't thought about that. I'll have to ask the feed store. Also, how warm is warm? I live in Utah so we have a couple months that are hot, several warm and several cold. Should I lay off on the corn all summer, or just July and August when it's scorching?
