When to expect new hens to begin to lay?

The 5 Barred Rock ones which I was told were born in October don't have beet red combs, they are more of a pinkish color. Does this mean they are too young? The lady I bought them from had a LOT of Barred Rock chickens so even though she had them sectioned off I suppose it's possible she got...

When to expect new hens to begin to lay?

I recently got my first chickens, three groups of different ones; 3 from one place, 5 from another place and a single one from yet another place. One of the hens is laying who seems to be the highest in the pecking order (and funny enough is one of the smaller chickens lol) is laying an egg...

Do 6 week old chicks know to get out of the rain?

I'm sure this is probably a dumb question but here goes... I lease property where I keep my chickens and it's 2 minutes from my house so I come and go frequently. There is a very large hen house and about pretty large fenced area (about 1/2 acre) for them to go out in. For now, my 6 week old...

How long are eggs good if they have been sitting in the nest?

They all sunk without hesitation and I left them in the later for a minute just to be sure they didn't rise up and they didn't. Do I need to candle them? If so I guess I need to look up how to do that. They weren't warm when my son picked them up if that means anything.

How long are eggs good if they have been sitting in the nest?

I just got all of my chickens within the last 2 weeks and recently moved them from my garage to their coop and yard. They were laying in the garage so I thought it was strange that they weren't laying at the farmyard. My son climbed up on a pile of hay and found 5 beautiful eggs in a spot I...

Oh good! I'm vegetarian but my husband eats seafood so on occasion we have shrimp in the house. He will be very happy to have a reason to eat shrimp. Thank you for the replies!

    Shrimp shells

I'm really new to chickens and trying to figure all of this out I was just about to throw away the peels (shells? not sure of the proper name lol) from shrimp but then I wondered if that would be something that is ok to give my chickens? I can't find the answer in my books. Thanks! Laura

New and need some help please

Hello - I'm really new! I just signed the lease on my small piece of country property today so I can finally get some chickens after wanting them for several years. I wish I would have done more research over the past couple of years because when I began to search for some chickens, I found...
