    Rooster won't return to coop

Thanks for the help. I only orderd two but got 3 silver leghorns. Looks like I'm going to have to build him a bach pad. Any suggetions on how to get him out of the timber and closer to our house. I've been moving his food closer and closer to the house but he still roosts in the same area.

    Rooster won't return to coop

I have a small flock of 10 hens and 3 roosters. One of the roosters has been run-off by the other two and won't return to the coop at night. This as gone on for weeks. He has found a tree in the near by timber (right behind my neighbors house which gives him an alarm clock I'm sure he doesn't...

    Young Chickens And Rain

Ha! Question answered. I have a mixed flock of Americanas, Silver Leghorns and Cornish X. Only the Cornish need guidance back into the coop at evening so I was worried about them in the rain. Is it just me or are Cornish not very smart?

3 mo old chicken died suddenly - heat stroke?

LOVE BYC! I was upset this morning when one of my Americanas (Red) was dead. My first thought was heat, but now I'm unsure. She just wasn't acting right yesterday as she is usually one of the first ones outside out of the 4 week old flock of 25 (now 24) The rest of the girls look fine and are...

    Cross Beak Chick

Glad I'm not alone...Got an americana (we call her Lady GaGa) that has a bad crossed beak and is the most outgoing of the 25. I understand that I might have to trim her beak and am not looking forward to it, but if it has to be done so be it. I have noticed that a Dremel tool is recommended but...

    Got sand? You should!

Quote: If you have a basic level foundation you'll be fine as sand "seeks" its own level. Plus you're gonna lose some every time you clean up.

    Got sand? You should!

Quote: Great ?. I've been told "yes" and "no". The ones that said yes told me that grit is not sand but crushed granite that the gizzard needs. So I'm gonna put out some grit just incase.

    Got sand? You should!

Quote: Good question @Elevan. I just figured the chickens would take care of any insects. They do love bugs! Maybe the sand is too deep. Anyone know the best depth for the sand?

Waiting on chicks this week! (May 1st)

Well day two and unfortunately the free exotic chick from McMurry did not make it thru the night, but the remaining 25 seem almost double in size and are very "curious" and active. The packing list indicates that I was sent an extra "free" silver Leghorn but was not in the box. I know counting a...

Waiting on chicks this week! (May 1st)

My post office called on Sunday morning to come pick them up! Glad they did because my free exotic chick is not doing well. All other chicks are doing fine but the unidenified chick is not active. I have seen it drink and peck at the crumble. I have chick starter in their water and gave it a...

    Using sand as litter????

As long as the wood floor is dry I think you will be fine. The only down side I have read is if the sand stays wet.

    Using sand as litter????

My chicks come next week and I am planning on using sand from the local concrete ready-mix company due to the fact that they use a washed river sand. I have read that this is best (due to its size) and also the cheapest way. My coop (in Illinois) has a concrete floor so if I have to change to...
