On of my hens is having a problem

I have noticed this this morning. What caused this and how do I help her? It looks as if she has an egg (or two) stuck in her and she can't get it out. She is making chicken noises and looks okay otherwise.

My chickens are eating laid eggs!

My birds have taken it upon themselves to eat the laid eggs. I collect the eggs every evening and was averaging about eleven. That suddenly dropped to four or five. When we cleaned the coup out (do it about once a week) one hen was attacking the already laid eggs. She would break the shell and...

Some of my hens lay eggs with soft shells

I have twenty-five hens (Americanas) and every day I get one or two eggs with a feeble shell. If you pick then up they are hard but they will break if you squeeze them too hard. It seems that I need to add something to the feed I give them. Any suggestions?

All but five have died and the ones left don't look so good

I bought 25 chicks from Ideal poultry that arrived 4 weeks ago. Seven died within the first 12 hours but I attributed that to the fact that they sent it out on the Monday that was MLK Day so it did not arrive until that Friday, the 23rd. But they have been slowly dying since. They appear to have...

How old need a rooster be to crow?

I got a shipment of chicks in mid-October. I had ordered 20 hens and one rooster. Four of the chicks died in the first three weeks but all the rest stayed healthy. I had thought that one of the dead ones had been the rooster because (until this morning) there was no crowing. Four AM this morning...

I need some advice! I bought an order from McMurray Hatchery. I needed 20 hens and one rooster. Their minimum order is 25, so I ordered four Jumbo Cornish X Rocks birds to try my hand at butchering in four months. But today my son came to me and said that the Cornish were being picked on. Not...

I need to know the name of the fencing

I need to secure my coop from rats. I know that there is a fencing that you dig down about a foot and bury it along the outline fo the coop but for the life of me I don't remember what it is called.

    How can I stop RATS!!

I have had a problem with rats. I thought it was pretty much benign but I changed feeder types and figured the little devils would move on. I had a hen go broody, I noticed her staying in the nest box when I locked up the chickens last night. My son lets them out in the morning so on one noticed...

What medicine do I give a chick that hatched here?

I have just had my first chick survive to four weeks and it suddenly hit me - does s/he need immunity from anything? i live in the California Bay area by the Coast. I would sure hate it if anything like dying of a preventative ailment should befall this little little jewel.

    SHAMOs Wanted

I am trying to find 3 Shamo hens. I want them for rat control with my flock.

Anybody know where to get Shamo?

I am looking for an oriental breed of chicken called a Shamo. It is my understanding that it is a 'wild' chicken that eats rats. I have problem with the dang critters so I want to use the Shamo, two or three hens, to keep them at abeyance. I have looked on line but I can't seem to find any.

    Hen sleeps outside the coop

I have 17 chickens, 16 hens and one rooster. A feral cat showed up and frightened the birds a bit. The rooster 'explained' to the cat why it shouldn't come around. I went down and chased the cat out of the yard (the rooster had it cornered). Since then I have had one chicken that sleeps outside...

How can you tell when the broodiness has ended

I had a hen go broody and I tried EVERYTHING. I finally I put her in an old dog crate with the bottom cut out if it. I put frozen items (from a 'keep cold' pack) under the cut out bottom. I fed her and kept her there for the better part of a week. She kept making all the 'broody' sounds and kept...

I need help with my broody hen

I have a broody hen who has been broody since May. I didn't have a mature enough rooster so I tried various 'cures' suggested on this site. They all failed. Then the young rooster I had gotten this Spring matured enough to 'boff' the other chickens so I put several of their eggs for her to sit...

My hen has been broody too long - Now what?

I've had a hen who has been broody for a couple of months. I have tried to break her of it several ways including putting some fertilized eggs in with her. (She would still move from box to box so she couldn't hatch anything.) I have finally just put her into a box with an open bottom to try to...

    Injured pullet

Last night something tried to get into my coop. I heard the ruckus and went out to chase it off. One bird was hurt on her leg. This morning I can see that her leg has been badly injured. I have put her by herself. Her leg is so badly damaged that she cannot use it at all and the skin on the...

My broody is in her fifth week!

My hen went broody about five weeks ago. At first I tried to discourage her. I put her in a crate with an open bottom to 'cool' her down but she hated it. So, after three days in there I let her out and she went back to brooding. I figured to just let it run it's cycle but there is no end in...
