Anyone have their coop inside of a large run? Pics?

3killlerBs I notice in your first picture on the side of the coop - there looks to be a stack of bricks. Is that to keep critters from digging underneath ? I have trouble with rats borrowing and getting into my coop.

    Is this too much ventilation?

Years ago ( as a newbie ) I covered the inside of the coop wall with foam - to keep them warm in the winter. OOPS. Next morning the hens had picked at and pecked holes everywhere. What a mess to clean up. Fortunately no one had swallowed anything. It`s unbelievable that I was so stupid. Now I...

    Is this too much ventilation?

I think you have done a marvelous job of ventilating your coop. The only thing I would be concerned about is that the vents need to have hard wire across them. They are perfect spaces for raccoons or other critters to crawl through. Having that problem myself - I know of what I speak !! Kudos...

Chicken screams when I touch them

She sounds like a little terror. Hens can be like people - and have a mean streak in them. I would just leave her alone. Don`t try to pick her up or go near her. Don`t throw her treats. As long as she is a good layer - let her live life on her terms. Wear hard boots when you are in the run - if...

Store bought coop... I know, bad idea.. too late

Oh dear. You do live and learn when venturing into the land of chickens. It`s a nice looking coup though. It will be easy to add on to if you decide to buy more hens. Go for pullets. Life will be easier. Chicken keeping really is fun for your family. Good luck.

    Can I trust him yet?

A few years ago I had another rooster - `Gus` who attacked me. I hit him on the head with a metal garbage can lid and he kept coming anyway. I finally hit him twice and he was knocked out. that was the end of `Gus`.

Cull him, or wait for protection?

I raised our rooster from a chick. Handled him, cuddled him and he liked to sleep on an old slipper of mine in the garage - while his girls free ranged. One day he turned on two of our grandchildren - they came screaming out of the forest with him hurtling after them. My husband shot him. Hooe...

Trees next to run? I want to tell my husband he is wrong

The one side of our run has Norwegian Christmas trees growing. They do give shade for the girls. However we find the raccoons use them to climb down into the run. They use the branches to reach the fence and then down they go. They usually do this at night when the girls are locked up, but have...

    On and off broody?

I have one like this - Myluckychucks - A mixed breed. She is on the nest and then off for a while. Gets annoyed and pecks if we try to move her off the nest. Then she loses interest. She races out of the daily treats. Sometimes goes back - sometimes not. Perplexed.

I am pleased for you. I have had many Olive Eggers through the years and none of them went broody. Who knows why ?

    When To Re-home a Rooster

I raised a R.R.rooster from hatch. He loved me. Would sleep in an old slipper of mine in the garage. About 9 months old he attacked me and my granddaughter. Gave her a cut on the chin. We took her to a walk in clinic to be sure nothing serious. My husband shot him. When the hormones click in...

Fodder Question 2: Alfalfa seeds with a white coating, what's that?

So the barley you are all buying - Is the barley in the grain isle ( split peas, lentils etc ) what everyone is using ? or is this different in the feed store ? Sorry I`m a bit ignorant with this.

Chickens laying less in the winter.

Well folks. My chickens used to stop laying in the winter. Now they are laying in the winter. The only difference is I now feed them handfuls of spinach every day. They are healthy and happy. That is all I know. For me it is working.

Chickens laying less in the winter.

My girls are still laying a few eggs every day in spite of the short days of light. An `old timer` chicken farmer told me the best way to keep them laying is to feed them fresh spinach every day. We tried it and it works !!!! Simple.

What are your Spring 2021 hatching plans?

Turkeys can be very friendly and enjoy interaction with people. They are also smart and learn well. Sit in the pen (or wherever they are ) for a few minutes every day. Talk to them and hand feed them. Wear a glove and feed them `long` treats - celery, carrots etc. to protect your fingers. Ive...

    Oldest Chickens

My oldest hen just passed away. 15 years old. She could not roost anymore and we settled her in a nice corner of the coop. We called her Mother because she was the best ever. Would pull blackberries off the bush and carry them over to her young. Has not laid for years but she deserved a nice...
