Hi Capebird,
Are your rocks laying eggs yet? Mine look like they are getting ready, but nothing yet. Hoping anyday. I just bought my first bag of organic layer pellets.
Mike
Ok, here goes. Hopefully I answer everything here. The coop is 4 x 6. 4' high in the front and 3' high in the back. It is very easy to clean. Vinyl floor and big doors in the back. The run is 5'x16'. I did not bury the hardware cloth, instead I brought it down to grade and out 12" from...
Hi,
I have read that buff orpingtons should not be allowed to get wet. However, I know several people who have them and have never heard of this. Their's get wet when it rains and they have not had any problems. We have 2 BO's, 2 BR's and 2 RR's. Keeping 2 out of the rain and not the others...
Hi there,
Our chicks are now 7 and 6 weeks old and we are switching them to grower feed. Our local store sells Poulin Grain. Just checking to see if anyone has any thoughts on the quality.
Thanks,
Mike
I think we will continue doing what we have done the last few days which is to put them out in the run/coop during the day and bring them in at night until the end of this week and then as long as it doesn't get any cooler then it is now, we will move them out. Thanks everyone for the replies.
Hi there,
We have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 barred rocks, and 2 Rhode Island Reds. Not anywhere near egg laying age yet, but planning ahead and wondering if it is just personal preference (owner and chicken) or is one better then the other? I have read conflicting things about straw and hay and...
My Buff Orpington chicks are 5 1/2 weeks old and fully feathered. We would like to start letting them stay out in the coop at night. Our Barred Rock chicks are 4 1/2 weeks old and mostly feathered but not completely. The Barred Rocks scream uncontrollably if they are separated from the...
Hi there,
I am putting the finishing touches on the coop and run this weekend and hoping to get my Buff Orpington chicks out into the coop (all weather permitting). I was wondering what most people use for a bar? I have seen 2 x 4's used, a friend told me 2 x 3's are better. I was wondering...
Hi there,
We have 2 3 week old Buff Orpington chicks and 2 2 week old Barred Rock chicks. We are planning on getting 2 Rhode Island Red chicks in another 3 weeks. By then, the Buff Orpingtons should be about ready to go out in the coop, but the Barred Rocks will probably still need a little...
The CNS link is a really good price, just not sure how much shipping will add to it. I bought mine at Lowes and it wasn't cheap. It made my run cost almost as much as my coop. I bought (6) 36" x 25' rolls of 1/2'.
I went with real wood with my coop for that reason. The cost difference in the long run for a few sheets to make a 4 x 6 chicken coop was not enough to break the bank. Remember, you are going to be eating the eggs.
I am new to this too. I looked around at a lot of coops and saw a lot that were too small, not made that well, and cost alot more then doing it myself. I finally decided that if I built it myself, I could get exactly what I wanted, make it the size I wanted, and I would know it was made to be...
I will be adding a run, something on the order of 8' x 12 or 16' and 6' high. Will be made with pressure treated 2x4's and 1/2" hardware cloth. I will free range them when we can be right with them in the yard. We have a lot of red tailed hawks and ospreys around, so I don't like the idea of...
I'm not too concerned with wind. It is pretty sturdy. It might have trouble in a hurricane, but so might my house. Other then that I think wind won't be a problem.
