We started out in mid May 2011. We picked up 2 Buff Orpington chicks and 2 Silver Lace Wyandotte chicks. The following week we got 2 Australorps and we hadn't realized how much the first 4 had grown until we put the 2 new ones in there We started with the 6 chicks in a dog crate in my...

My chooks and I live in Oregon

I'm located in Oregon, just south of central and about 16 miles from the coast. Reedsport is on the coast and I'm about 16 miles east of there. It didn't get very hot here this past summer but most summers we have lots of days in the 90s and a few days in the 100s. Winters are mostly mild. We...

Non emergency. Bald spot on my rooster

We checked for lice and didn't see any. We don't think it's mites. The coop was previously a greenhouse so no critters lived in there. I'm not sure if anything that lived on plants would live on the chickens. The building has a cement foundation that goes up about 2 feet from the floor so...

Non emergency. Bald spot on my rooster

I was out gathering eggs today and my rooster jumped up on top of the nesting boxes right in front of me and stood there. He has a bald area and it seems to have some scabs. It's like he was showing me. Does anyone know what it could be and what would cause it? Link to a picture below...

    Bird netting over the run?

I think what I'll do is use 1x2 or 2x2 wood strips to run from the top of the chicken house wall to the top of the 5 ft fence. Then put the netting over that. That way the netting won't sag too much. The building is about 14 ft long, a bit over half of that being the coop. The fence will...

    Bird netting over the run?

Gail, is that pipe in the 3rd photo, flexible pvc pipe? I really like that idea and will have to look into that for our smaller area on the side of the chicken house that we want to get fenced soon. At the back of the coop will be a larger area that we may not fence until spring. And how much...

    Bird netting over the run?

The man who built our chicken house had a budget and he bought 5 ft high chain link fencing for the run. I'm sure that 5 ft is not going to keep the chickens in, especially if they get spooked. We were thinking of getting bird netting to go over the top to keep the chickens in. Is there any...

Is corrugated plastic that is on a greenhouse good to use for a roof?

My sister-in-law has a greenhouse that she no longer uses. She's decided to use the greenhouse for a chicken coop. She's making some alterations of course like replacing the corrugated plastic siding with wood. We're wondering if we can use the corrugated plastic roof that is on there now or...

How do we teach our 2-3 week old chicks to climb the ladder to the top

We just put our 2 and 3 week olds in a chicken tractor and last night we had to get them out of the bottom and put them into the top at 9pm. Then this morning I had to stick my hand into the top and give them all a push down the stairs. How do we teach them to go up and night and down in the...

Do Australorps grow at a slower rate?

We have 3 week old Orpingtons and 3 week old Wyandottes and they're growing pretty fast. We have 2 week old Australorps that are still very small. Much smaller than the other 2 breeds when they were two weeks old. Do the Aussies just grow at a slower rate? Thanks!

Do you think that we could we have a rooster?

Thank you WSW What really makes us suspicious is that we have 2 SLWs, one has a bright red comb and the other has a pale pinkish comb.

Do you think that we could we have a rooster?

Thanks for the info Padfoot, we'll check them out. I still wonder about the difference in the comb colors though. Time will tell!

Do you think that we could we have a rooster?

Here is the picture of the Silver Laced Wyandotte that we think is the culprit. The comb is bright red. http://www.flickr.com/photos/plwebb/5777816981/lightbox/ This image is of the other Silver Laced Wyandotte and it's comb is not bright red but more "dry looking"...

Do you think that we could we have a rooster?

My sister-in-law and I are raising some chicks. We got 4 (what were supposed to be girls) on May 19 that were about 2-3 days old at the time. So they're about 2 weeks old now. They're over at my SIL's house next door and she just emailed me to ask me to inquire here. She said... "Twice I have...
