I have a 1 year old mutt hen. She is white with a few black specks. She recently went through her first full molt and now she is grey or taupe colored. Is it normal for chickens to change colors when they molt???
Very weird!!!
Well the drama continues with my nasty neighbor. Evidently she has realized that we are in complete compliance with our chickens and coop. So she has now decided to put up a wood fence. That sounds great right. I thought my problem was solved. But now I have a serious danger to my chickens. She...
I am fairly new to chicken keeping. My experience, in my area(Dallas, TX) is the hawks are more active in the winter. My chickens free ranged all day every day from October 2010 till this February when my frizzle was attached by a hawk. (She survived!Yay!) It was right after a bad week long snow...
They are flying over a 4 foot chain link fence. There is nothing over there, just more dried up grass like we have!! (Drought in texas!) These girls are mixed breed and are fairly small so I guess they are just real light. They just fly right up. The wing clipping seems to have slowed them down...
Ok guys...I clipped my 3 naughty hen's wings. I went by the general concensus and only clipped the right side. I clipped the 10 flight feathers to just a little shorter then the back feathers just like the diagrams and pictures I found showed. The first few days they did not fly over the fence...
Update!! The white one crowed this morning!! It was so cute. Very tiny crow compared to full size roos. But Im disappointed because I cant keep roosters. Im waiting on the splash one to crow, I have a feeling she may be a he!!
Yes, the two in question are more aggressive towards eachother. They chest bump and kind of do that stare down thing where they get low and look at eachother. The white one seems to be the dominant one. The little red/buff one will just stand in the corner while the other two "duel."
Thanks! Yours is beautiful too! They are so much fun! The problem is that my grown hens dont like them very much. So I would like to get another female is these two end up being roos. It is tough to wait!
UPDATE!!!!!! I have 3 silkie babies. They are 12-14 weeks old. I have read about streamers on male silkies. I believe I see streamers on 2 of the 3 silkies. Also the little buff/red one is smaller then the other two. What do you think??? I am a newbie, thanks for your advice.
The white one...
I live in the city and have chain link fence on one side of my yard. Three of my 8 hens ocassionally jump the fence and look for bugs in my neighbors yard. The house is up for sale and no one lives there. But the owner is obviously not chicken friendly(not really friendly at all) and lo and...
I have the same concerns as Secretchicken. I want to put sand in the coop, but my chickens are diggers and Im afraid it will end up sand and dirt mixture. How deep should the sand be?
