At what age do chicks no longer need a heat lamp?

I would say that they may be alright if you took the lamp but 5 weeks is a bit young and it may be a good idea to let them have the heat for another week or even two. There are so many variables regarding local climate, brooder types and chicken breeds that it's hard to say to be perfectly...

    Value of young laying hens

Hello everyone. I have a half dozen 7 month old birds that I'd like to sell. 3 BR's and 3 RIR's, but I'm just not sure what a fair asking price would be. I'm sure I'd sell them easily enough ( I live in a rural farming area ) but I don't want to just give them away since I have taken the time...

Eventually mixing chicks with 2 year old hens. Any pointers??

I have given it a lot of thought and I've talked to a much more experienced chicken farmer than myself and I think I've got a plan in mind that will work much better than my original idea. My plan is to expand the size of the coop I've got and then simply split it in half using a bit of chicken...

Eventually mixing chicks with 2 year old hens. Any pointers??

Hello everyone. I have 4 two year old hens ( 2 BO's and 2 BR's) and I'm considering adding 2 RIR's and 2 RSL's (chicks). I have a suffcient sized henhouse with an enclosed run that I use regularly although my girls generally free range. I'm wondering if anyone could offer a few pointers or...

I wonder if I have a "fair weather chicken" - for egglaying that is.

Thanks for the speedy reply minihorse. I kinda forgot about the daylight thing having an effect.

I wonder if I have a "fair weather chicken" - for egglaying that is.

Hello everyone. I have a White Crested Black Polish hen that is a year and a half old. I got her and 5 assorted other hens at 1 day old and once she began laying, she was keeping pace with all of the other girls in the coop. Then, this past Oct. or Nov. ( I can't remember exactly), she just...

How long on average for a Polish hen to begin egglaying??

I think I've answered my own question. I did a litte digging online and found that Polish are not really reliable egglayers. Best case scenario, they may lay an egg or two each week and some won't even do that much. No worries. She is what she is, funny to look at anyway. Plus, I doubt she...

How long on average for a Polish hen to begin egglaying??

Hello all. I have a small flock of hens that are all at 30 weeks old. 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Buff Orps, 1 RIR and 1 white crested black polish. Everyone is laying well except the polish. She is quite small, but seems to be perfectly healthy and I was just wondering if polish hens are typically...

My chickens STILL won't lay eggs in the nest boxes. Any suggestions?

SUCCESS ! ! ! I have taken the first egg laid in a nest box !! I used two old plastic milk crates, turned on their sides as makeshift temporary nest boxes. I fastened a 1"x4" board to the front opening and threw some straw inside them, then placed them on top of a couple of patio blocks...

    Mealworm farming

Everyone's temps tend to vary depending on where you keep the worms and what season you're in. Average household temps will suffice, though it seems that the worms grow faster when they're warmer. Some of us have them up to 80 or 90 inside incubators with good success. You can answer a lot...

My chickens STILL won't lay eggs in the nest boxes. Any suggestions?

Fred, Thank you for taking the time to write such an informative response. I will certainly try the things you mention. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna head out to the coop right now. Thank you.

My chickens STILL won't lay eggs in the nest boxes. Any suggestions?

The bedding in the boxes is/was straw up until a few hours ago when I changed it to pine shavings to try something different. They have been laying on the floor of the coop which is covered with sand.

My chickens STILL won't lay eggs in the nest boxes. Any suggestions?

I have a small flock of 6 birds in upstate NY. Three of the six birds have begun laying for me but none of them will use their nest boxes. I had an older flock of birds awhile back that used the same coop and nest boxes with no problem at all. The boxes are roughly 12"x12" with straw as bedding...

    Mealworm farming

Go for it !! It's not really gross at all. The worms are not slimy and there's hardly any odor to a colony at all. Fresh veggies every few days and some patience is all it really takes.

    Mealworm farming

I have mine in a plastic 3 drawer organizer and they seem to be doing great. Each drawer is 7''-8'' high (plenty of room to drill holes above the worms), 14'' from front to back and about 12'' wide. Actual surface area is somewhere around 168" per drawer and I think that this setup should do...

New layers using the floor instead of nest boxes

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I couldn't come up with golf balls, but my mother found some fake eggs at Michael's yesterday. I'll take a few for the chickens and she can have the rest for her crafts and decorations. All I have to do is weight them down with a little sand and with any luck...

    Mealworm farming

Quote from Scooter&Suzie: I have a 9" by 10" container. Is that too small for 1,000 worms? I think a container of that size would be ok to start with but you may want to look for something a bit larger once you've got beetles breeding. 1000 worms will pretty much cover the container you...
