Review by '' on item 'Plymouth Rock'

I have a dozen Barred Rocks and I love them. They are very sassy, curious, brave, and some of them can be a little bossy. I have two that will run to me when I call and point at the ground because they know it means there's a grasshopper or some other tasty critter for them. They follow me...

Review by '' on item 'Australorp'

My Australops have the sweetest personality, are very calm and docile, and are friendly and easy to pick up. I have 1 and 2 year olds and they remain among my favorites. Because they're so docile, they tend to be on the low end of the pecking order, but I have a couple who have a spot of the...

I'm so sorry about Patsy. I lost a super-sweet girl last year and it was really hard. I have a sick one right now and I haven't yet determined what's wrong with her. Don't have a chicken vet here. Hope your other girls are ok.

    Help!! Fox Attack. :(

I'm in Orange, VA and I lost two hens (and a lot of sleep) to a huge red fox in May & June in broad daylight. It actually walked to within 20 feet of me and didn't run away until I shot at it. I was very upset. :-(

    Help!! Fox Attack. :(

Unfortunately, she could still die from the shock and trauma, so you're doing the right thing by putting her in a carrier and keeping her quiet and warm. Injured birds need to be kept warm. I think it would be good to put electrolytes in her water, instead of sugar, and make sure she is...

My hens trill when they're happy, so it sounds like she's glad you're home. The standard Sulmet treatment appears to be 2 days at full dose, followed by 4 days at half dose. That's how I treated mine and all recovered. If you google images of chicken coccidiosis, you'll see the characteristic...

Possible respiratory ailment - sounds like a stuffy nose when talking

Sorry it's so long. I didn't want to leave out something that may be important. One of my black Ausralorps, 14 months old, looked droopy (head, tail, and wings down) on July 7th and when I examined her she sounded like she had a stuffy nose, but only when talking. Her breathing sounded...

Coccidiosis Questions - egg safety, feces composting

Blue - I see you're in VA, too. I wonder if the weather has made it worse - wet, dry, hot, then not...? I'll have to get some powdered lime. The soil here is very acidic (we had it tested) so we'll soon be spreading lime everywhere. Maybe it'll reduce some of the cocci load in the soil...

Coccidiosis Questions - egg safety, feces composting

Thanks kimmybee. I'm worried because she stopped eating & drinking again. I just finished tubing more water into her. I really like my girls and I don't want to lose her.

Coccidiosis Questions - egg safety, feces composting

Hi Everyone. I love this site and use it frequently as a reference. Thanks to everyone who posts. I'm pretty new to chickens - got my first ones May 2010. I've had no issues except one Australorpe with recurring sour crop who, unfortunately died despite medication. Two days ago I installed...
