    Hole in coop roof

Something tore/chewed a good sized hole in the roof of our coop which is made of roofing panels. My girls were unharmed, but one lost a chunk of feathers. Could this be a raccoon?

    new chick walks strangely

I'm new to chicks, and one of them kicks his right leg behind him when he walk . Is this a form of spradle leg. I was told he was 5 days old, but he is much smaller than the other chicks and has fewer wing feathers.

    Hen won't leave the coop

Last week, something got into our coop and killed 3 of my 4 hens. The last one didn't seem visibly injured, but now she won't come out of the coop unless we make her, and she's not eating normally. Is she traumatized, or should I worry that something is physically wrong with her?

Something got most of my flock today

We haven't had a problem in the 1+ year that we've had our hens, but today when my husband got home, 2 were dead and 1 is seriously injured (our of our 4 hens). It looks like either something nudged open the latch on the door to the boxes and got in the coop/run or someone in the family didn't...

    Barred Rock losing feathers

One of my barred rocks has lost all her feathers on her rear and her back near her tail. She looks pitiful. She was 1 in April. Could this be molting or should I look out for something else?

    Managing the heat?

How do I help my girls manage the heat? They have constant access to water, and I've been putting ice in it. I've tried to give them cool treats like chilled grapes and watermelon, but they don't seem to like them. We've only had them since Saturday, and the heat is oppressive this week...

    getting them in the coop?

How do I train them to go in their coop at night? This is only day 2 of our Chicken adventure. Last night, DH and I had to work together to round them up (fast little buggers) and get them in. They came out with no problem this morning.

    Doghouse recycling has begun! Questions?

Ok, we've started work on the coop (former doghouse) and run. Dh has lifted it off the ground and is fashioning a door for it, as I type. Now, roosting . . . What do hens roost on? (Is this a stupid question?) How high up should it be? How do they get up there? Will they know this or...

    Starting a flock

Dh and I are just getting in to this, and we are researching before starting our flock. We have space for 8 hens, but decided that 4 or 5 would be more manageable for us. We are upcycling our old dog house and run into a coop/run. Now, how should we go about starting our flock. Should we...

    Breed referral

My husband and I are just starting out with chickens, and we want them mainly for egg laying. What hardy breeds do you recommend that would also be docile with our 3 kids? Thanks!

Turning a dog house into a coop

My husband and I are new to this, and we are thinking of turning our old dog run and dog house into a coop/run. The run is about 10 or so feet long and about 4-5ft high, and the dog house was big enough for a large lab. Can you give us any pointers into accomplishing this? Thanks!

    Hi, from GA

Hi, there! I'm in central GA and my husband and I have decided that we want to venture into the world of chickens to go along with the general craziness here (3 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 veggie gardens). We have 8 acres and are classified in a rural/farming area. Many of the people who live on...
