Introducing flock to a new coop/henhouse

We are in the process of building a new chicken coop/henhouse. It is quite the "Taj Mahal" compared to where they are at present. (I hope to post pics when finished.) Looking for any advice, tips, instructions, etc. on getting the flock to start using the new place, when complete. Thanks in...

When should I integrate 8 wk old pullets?

I have 10 pullets that are about 8 weeks old - Americaunas and Production Reds. I already have 3 big ones in my flock - 1 Aracauna Roo and 1 hen, and a RIR hen. These are all about 1 1/2 years old. These hens lay regulary. My question is when and how should I integrate the younger ones with...

    Too many Roos?

I have a small flock of only 4. We definently have 2 Roos and I now anther one has started to crow. I actually thought this little red one was a hen, but it's now trying to crow. Is this a sign that it is a Roo or do chickens imitate each other? I've also read that some hens crow. Is this...

No eggs yet, so should I lay off "treats"?

I have received no eggs yet. (my chickens are about 6 - 7 months old, I think). I've read/heard to lay off the "extra treats" until egg production begins. For treats I give them lettuce, tomatoes, celery, apples, dried mealworms . . . obviously NOT at the same time and usually every other...

Help! I've tried the DE in the coop and I still have the ants. They are not in the nesting boxes, thank goodness (no eggs yet anyway). The ants are out in the run, too. I read from someone "Just let the chickens eat the ants", but they don't get them all. I try not to put out too much...

    Ants in the coop! Help

I noticed ants (the small, regular ones) in the coop yesterday when I was cleaning. There is no food or water in there. It looked like they were carrying off bits of poop. How can I control this without harming my girls? Thanks in advance for your advice and help.

Confused about feed . . . Is scratch-mix a staple or just occasional?

With so much info out there re: feed, I'm a bit confused. I've been feeding my chicks scratch-mix in a trough and laying crumble in a seperate feeder. They get this in the morning. In the afternoon, about 5-ish, I go out with what I call a "treat" for them. This is either cut-up tomatoes...

    Howdy from Texas!

Just getting started in the Wonderful World of Chickens! We have 4 Anacauna-mix hens that are maybe 4-5 months old. They are all varying shades of orange-red with some black feathers. I have had them about a month. I first heard about BYC through Mother Earth News magazine and website. I...
