I have used the paper towels under the eggs in the past and I think it obstructs the air flow especially when the paper towels get wet. I have eggs on lockdown now without the paper towels.

We have a hawk also and last summer we lost a lot of ducklings to the hawk. :(

I've learned, it's better to stay ahead of the predator. This month I have caught a bobcat and an opossum. But I didn't get these predators until after I lost some hens to their attack.
