For real? I was told it was a Red Star or a Red Comet which were both sex linked. But I don't know much about chickens :)

Anyone want to take a look at my 11-12wk old hen and tell me what you think? She started showing signs of this at 4-5wks. She eats, drinks, plays well with others. She just doesn't use her one leg. At first we thought maybe she dislocated her leg, but we are new to this and pretty naive. I'm...

Wow - it's been busy here! My name is my maiden name backwards and I have been using it online since 1992. Personally, I am vintage '74.

Bear update: Apparently our friendly neighborhood bear has been causing trouble all over the mountain and was caught and relocated at some point this week. Good news for me and my chickens. Hopefully he didn't leave any friends behind.

Yes, I will. The guy in charge of the barrel traps lives across the street from us.

I didn't even think about insurance. I'll look into it, at least for the future. No blood, that we could see. S/he was HUGE. We did see him. I would guess he was close to 500lbs. We would only shoot to scare, not to hurt the bear. Luckily (maybe?), the head guy in charge of bears in PA is our...

We were visited by the biggest bear we have ever seen back here in the hollow last night. The dogs alerted us at first. DH was scaring him off with a flood light and he kept coming back. He busted a window out of my coop, so for now everything is boarded up. DH has to go out of town today and...

Things are much happier in my coop since Chicken Noodle Soup has been caged alone. The others are so much more comfortable without him terrorizing them. Today is take 2 on the watering system. The first one was leaky and didn't give us the final product we were looking for. DH is outside...

Annie, my 4 and 7 week olds have been out for over a week now. I'm in Howard, just down the mountain from you. I had a heat lamp in there the first week (it was COLD), but it has been off the last few nights. They did fine last night and it's not supposed to go below 50 tonight. In other news...

Since it was 80 degrees here in 16841 this afternoon and we're still working on the coop (not all the ventilation is done and no run yet), I had to rig up a red neck screen door to cool down the girls for a few hours. :)

I did that for about a week and then let them together with supervision for a couple of days (a couple hours at a time) and then let them all loose!

It is hysterical to watch her run around the coop. She slides around corners on her feet!

This was today's project. One of the nipples leaks and will need to be replaced, but I'm pretty happy with it. And here is one of my little friends checking it out. This is a better (more recent) picture of the one that I thought was maybe a cochin. She's 4 weeks old...thoughts?

We built this feeder today and layed out plans for the automatic waterer. DH will run to Lowe's after dinner. We are using a large metal water tank for a holding tank. Is using metal an issue? I will have a little cleanout valve inside the coop on the PVC to add ACV or meds or anything. We...
