Is anyone using heat lamps in their coops at night yet? I have mine ready to go but wasn't thinking that they really needed it yet with all the warm temps we have been having. Should I turn it on and if they are too warm they will just move away from it? Just curious as to what everyone else...

Quote: I was wondering too if this was anyone here. Would also like to keep updated on this. I haven't been on here in about a month or so. I hope everyone is doing well and had a great Thanksgiving!

Light Brahma and Dark Brahma would be my vote too. If you put my Light Brahma next to yours I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. They lay a nice light brown/pinkish color egg. Mine are 10 months old and the eggs are weighing right around 2oz for my Light Brahma and 2.2oz for my Buff Brahma...

Dove are good eating if you like dark meat. They kinda taste like the dark meat of a wild turkey. If prepared right they are delicious. I just had some this weekend prepared in a Mole' sauce. The Ringnecks, Collared, or Eurasian (all the same bird) can be taken any day of the year with no...

Also wanted to add that you should try bird netting around the coop and run. You can get a bunch of it relatively cheap at Home Depot in the garden section. If the sunscreen and moving the food didn't work for me, that was going to be my next step.

Any ideas? My girls won't be free to roam because of HOA but the coop is not air tight but any means. We've tried getting rid of the things but they are determined pests. I have my coop inside a 7' x 14' chain link dog run with a fenced top. It doesn't keep the sparrows out but the doves...

The chickens are wet but surely seem to be enjoying the rain.

Those are all nice laid back breeds.... although Delawares can be comical at times. An Australorp will be a good layer, silkies are eye candy, Brahmas are calm but they don't lay that well. Orpingtons can lay well if you get a good strain... There is a gal in Goodyear that sells some HUGE BBS...

Quote: I wimped out today. I could not trim my chickens scissor beak, not my thing. I took her to my vet and had him do it...LOL He has chickens himself and is a Avian bird specialist. They shortened the lower beak so it fit under the top beak which curves downward and is pointed. It did bleed...

To "tarp" or not to "tarp", that is the question. Will having a tarp on the top of the run as a shade provider actually hold in heat? Would I be better off using shade cloth? I have a tarp on about 1/2 my run (on the roof only to keep out sun and rain) but I was wondering if it actually holds...

Quote: You can trim the beak with a dog nail clipper. I haven't personally done it but I read a few threads on here of people doing that for a curved or deformed beak. Just do a little at a time and she should be fine.

Quote: Sorry to hear about all your losses. This heat can be really brutal. Glad the fans are helping. I try all I can to keep my birds cool. Even with misters, frozen treats and ice blocks I still see them panting occasionally when it is super super hot. Thankfully it is going to cool...
