What hatchery did you get this from? Australorp and Orpington bantams are rare from hatcheries. I know of a couple with Buff Orpington bantams, but none with Australorp or Black/Blue Orpington Bantams.
Sometimes aggressive birds are just bored. A few weeks ago Jahdan bought a few Happy Hen Treat Balls. You can put anything inside. Jahdan has used cabbage, kale and even tomatoes. Google it and you will find numerous retailers.
They roosted inside all winter with no issues. This was a freak late ice storm. Black Orpingtons next door were fine. The hens were fine. These two guys just did not go to roost as normal.
We did not keep any. Allowed others to go forward with our eggs. Then we lost our Splash male with a harsh winter storm. We do plan on watching a few this year with a different Blue Orp cockerel.
My son Jahdan (12) is really enjoying his Australorps. They are the line developed by poultry judge Terry Britt. We have eggs in the incubator now. He is hoping for a good hatch. Jahdan wants to show a full display at the shows this fall. Lots of work ahead of us, but he has his goal set.
Bank tellers are not given counterfeit money to study. They are given the real money. So when they spot a counterfeit they know it. If you want to show the Australorp "down the road" you should start with the best stock you can find. Then when you see one that looks off Standard, you will know it.
Congratulations Marguerite Lindemann! She won Reserve SCCL, Australorp Bantam, cockerel. Judge Pat Malone stated hers were the finest Australorp Bantams he had ever seen. Maggie has set the bar high!
MeanV2, sent you a PM.
As for Gabbard Farms. They are very nice folks. Have talked to them on the phone. they have hatchery X Exhibition stock that they have sued to improve their original stock. You will get better quality than a hatchery but less than show quality. They have great customer...
My son recently acquired a small flock of Black Australorps from a friend. Not sure on their linage, but she bought them at the APA National 2010 in Shawnee, OK. I think Jahdan did well for an 11 year old! He also picked up a pair of very bad hair day chickens from the lady. He is so proud of...
One Australorp bantam just hatched. Now for the second. hoping for both pullets cause Maggie will get me a cockerel! I will try to get some photos of Maggie's birds and post. Jim Crain in Louisiana, a poultry judge, also has them.
Well..... we DO NOT have Australorps!
However, the kids have some Australorp bantam eggs developing in the incubator.....
and.....
A BYC friend was talking to me on the phone this morning. She wanted to know if I knew of any 4H kids that would like to have some Black Australorps. My 11...
Stromberg's is a dealer, not a hatchery or a breeder. Most of their show quality chicks come from their "neighbor" Duane Urch. Better to order direct from Duane.
Though, I have always liked ordering supplies from Stromberg's.
Here is a wonderful new thread just for the discussion of the Australian Australorps! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/708735/the-australian-australorp-thread\
Meanwhile, this thread will contine to discuss the North American Australorp as it has always done.
