Cari,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Maya was such a gorgeous and well behaved dog. Having just lost a dog who was so special to me, I know how hard this is. My heart and prayers go out to you and I hope you can get to that place where you just think about all the joy she brought to...
Dana,
So sorry to hear of your lost. I lost one of my barred rock hens in the heat this summer as well. I don't remember it ever being this hot for so long. El Cajon has pretty much been over 95 deg everyday since early August.
You might try calling Ranch Feed in Jamul, or City Farmers Nursery. City Farmers just started carrying organic feeds and their prices are reasonable. He carries both Modesto and Kruse.
Can anyone take on some orphan chicks? I woke up this morning to three more chickens than I had last night. Apparently someone dumped them in my yard overnight. Two are young barred rock chicks, maybe 6-7 weeks old and I believe one is a pullet and one is a cockerel. There is also a strange...
Is that a frizzle naked neck? Crazy. And I've never seen naked neck chicks before - very cute. Thanks for the advice, I am debating whether to leave the chicks with the hens or transfer them to a brooder and raise separately. I am planning to sell them as I am full up in my coops.
Anybody ever have two broody hens on one nest? One of my Polish hens went broody and about a week later an ameraucana jumped in there with her and has been there ever since. They have eight silkie eggs. This is the first time I have left eggs under broody hens so not sure what to expect. All...
Cari, I can't wait to visit your baby turkeys. They're going to raise quite a ruckus along with the bleating goats, cackling hens, and crowing roosters. Love the sound of country :)
Yay! Give those girls a chance. Mine were so flighty (literally) when they were young, they roosted for about two months on a high wisteria branch near the roof of the patio on my shed. I was finally able to entice them into the coop with scratch and trained them to go in at night. Crazy...
PsychoChick - I too unexpectedly became the owner of three brown leghorns (the feed store told me they were ameraucanas). They were flighty at first, but have become much less so. They will do the chicken squat when I walk by and I can pet them. They are beautiful birds, who don't eat much...
I love the fact that really young cockerels crow as though it is involuntary and they are so surprised at the big sound that comes out of their mouths....One more thing to love about chickens.
I got my first blue egg today!!!!!!! Who knew it would be so egg-citing? I am not sure whether this came from a Lavendar or wheaten ameracauna. They are both 5-6 months old. So cool.........
Hi KKH - I am planning to attend and will bring deviled eggs to share as well as a fruit salad. I don't have any extra chickens to bring, but am interested in buying berry bushes and other goodies folks are bringing. Looking forward to seeing you all again.
Is anyone else having difficulty...
Cari, Can you add 1 BOSS to my order? Thanks
Sunny - so happy your baby made it. Love the name "Drama"
And Coastal Chick, I'm so glad the ladies got a reprieve.

Coastal, my three brown leghorns dependably laid almost an egg a day each for about 8 months, then in Aug/Sep they started molting and stopped laying entirely. I just got my first white egg yesterday, after almost 3.5 months. Today I got 2. The other nine laying pullets didn't...
I'm in for a meet up anytime. I also need at least 5 bags of feed. Jan or Feb is good.
This is the project we just finished - Coop #3 and the last one, I hope. Thank goodness the sun finally came out long enough to dry the paint and finish the flooring. I've also included a photo of the...
