Did you buy eggs or established birds? Lack of copper on the females is a common problem with Marans no matter who you buy from. Hatching eggs are always a total crap shoot no matter who you buy from. What sort of money are you looking to spend? As Marans are so newly established, I'm not aware...
I'm so glad to hear that the judges are starting to appreciate the Marans. I know that hasn't always been the case!!! And so nice of Jim to say so. Sounds like we are making progress with the birds.

This is a Black Copper male at 8 weeks
His comb is quite dark already and notice the wattles developing.
This is a female at 12/13 weeks. Notice how pale her comb is. And small by comparison even though it is a full month later. Also, no wattle development.
