Lol! Look at that! So awesome... what a beautiful hen too.
You and Miss Lydia are totally right-- they both ventured out into the rest of the territory within a couple of hours. Like a little satellite orbiting mom, baby stayed with her and imitated her. Preen for preen, stretch for...
I'm just now experimenting with this too. So far, the mother has been very protective. The other hens have taken curious pecks at the chick, but too much and she'll retaliate. There was one pretty big scuffle with another hen (a RIR) yesterday, and I was surprised by the absolute pummeling...
So, she's out in the run with baby already?!
After reading about broody/baby integration, I noticed many said to not keep them cooped up too late the following morning to avoid stress of close quarters. So I opened the hatch at 6am, saw that there had been no mayhem, and went back to sleep (I...
Wow, they're such fast learners. Baby scratches with momma, and listens to her. Keeps pecking her in the eye though... kids! Yep, she's on the floor with baby tonight.
Thank you! Well, I opened the nest boxes back up and they came down into the main coop-- the fuzzy on its own, down the ramp. Many of the other gals aren't paying them much mind at the moment. One of the RIRs did take a couple of pecks and challenged momma... a BIG chicken fight ensued... and...
Update / Photo: The wee Cochin/Delaware is doing well. The fuzzy seems to be able to motor around quickly and is becoming curious about the rest of the "chickeniverse", so I'm going to open the brooder today and see how it goes. The WL egg didn't make it, but at least I've got this!
Here are a couple new photos. Do you guys think it looks more like a Cochin or a Delaware? There are some foot feathers, but not as much as the father's.
The broody Party Rock talks to him/her... I did dip its beak in water then food... seems to be pecking about now. At least she lets me...
How funny! Maybe their biology is inconsistent and they just do what they feel, even if fleeting! Most of mine like to share as well, although "Mean Della" likes her space and will peck the others out so she can lay.
I candled the WL eggs, and two are certainly a no-go. But the third I left...
These are sorta bad pics. It's been raining and dark, so a bit blurry and messy. Here are the biological parents (Delaware + Cochin):
And the fuzzybutt:
I'll probably remove the leghorn eggs today-- day 26 for them so...
Ah, thanks! LOL at Mike Rowe. And wow at McMurray... So THAT'S what the breeder was trying to explain about the feathers. Well, either way, it's going to stay a part of the flock. I normally work late and sleep in, but I think I'll be running out to see the fuzzy early.
Hooray!!! I have a fuzzy butt!!!
I heard a lot of peeping earlier but let her be. Just peeked in the dark and saw a wee fluffy yellow/white head staring at me.
Oh my gosh. Good heavens... are YOU okay? Sorry this happened.
If it comforts you ANY, when I was growing up, my friends and I got into heap-fulls of trouble. We could have fallen out of trees and broken bones. We rode our bikes into town and something bad could have happened. We jumped...
Hehe, funny! She's super mellow. Okay, took a peek: the pip is bigger and looks poked through, but no zipping yet. I don't want to bother her too much, and naturally the egg is the furthest from where I can tip her. There's a storm coming in tonight, so I may lock-up soon. A little chillier...
LOL! Competition... gets 'em every time! I gave up my WL roo, too. He was a looker (some x with a show bird) but had the demeanor of a violent rock star. How do you like your Lavenders? I'm considering pulling an old switcheroo on the next broody.
Ah, okay. I heard there was some feather...
