Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Probably they are breaking or going bad and she is eating them - it's an instinct thing that other birds do too - the smell of rotting or broken eggs would attract predators to the nest, so she eats them to keep that from happening. Or perhaps you have a snake getting in and stealing them - are...

I've got a keet! Just one that I've seen so far, and there might be more, but I think a lot of the eggs were late quitters so we will see. I know there were at least three with definite life when I last candled. Tomorrow, I'll take a closer look and see how many we have, I just didn't want to...

Here are my two current broodies. This one has guinea keets due possibly tomorrow, but any time between tomorrow and Thursday they could hatch. This is Green, and she is just starting to brood. I'll be giving her some eggs tonight and moving her to a crate so the others can't bother her...

You're right, she'll get off the nest when the first chick hatches, so you'll want to put the other ones in the incubator. I'm worrying myself that if the guinea eggs under my BO hatch at day 26 instead of 28 she'll abandon the chicken eggs that aren't due to hatch till day 28 so they might find...

Well, I said I was going to get more broodies and I was right. My original broody has keets and chicks due the 30th. A second BO went broody and she's getting d'uccle eggs whenever they arrive (supposed to have arrived today but you know how the PO is) and now my black australorp has decided she...

Sure, I'd like to see it. As a vet student it would be interesting to see, especially if they have sources to back it up. It is true that stressing them out can weaken their immune system. Did you know the Marek's vaccine can become less effective over time? There are boosters that you can give...

The thing about reversing the vaccination isn't true. They don't even use real Marek's when they vaccinate so the vaccine can't give them Marek's, and rough handling wouldn't cause a bird to lose antibodies that it made in response to the vaccine. Not sure where that was posted but wherever it...

I've got another one now! Another BO, this one is Penny, my first BO hen. She's a good mother and will be getting some bantam eggs to hatch for me. I just have to figure out where the heck I'm going to put her. Usually it would be in a large dog crate in the corner of the coop but I have broody...

I've got another broody BO! Don't know where I'm going to put this one or what I'm going to give her to hatch. Might have to buy some eggs. At least that's the excuse I'm going with :P

@AnneInTheBurbs, thanks! He was pretty expensive as far as chickens go! He's my breeding rooster for my cemani flock and they don't get out unless I am in the yard. The two groups were out free ranging together and he mated with her once, and it took! I will post a picture for you when I'm home...

She was cranky tonight when I checked her eggs, lol! But she is all snuggled in on them and apparently the plastic has put her 'sisters' completely off sleeping on her crate, which is good. She now has five guinea eggs, but she's getting all twelve when we get closer to hatch. She also has three...

Well, my broody BO (I really need to band and name her, lol) is too dedicated to her eggs. As I suspected, she is not getting off them unless I pull her off. She pooped in her nest too :sick So since I had to clean that up anyway, I switched her from a five gallon bucket, which she pretty much...

It should be okay! A lot of people do lone chicks with broodies. As long as it has its mother, it's not lonely :) I don't think Lacie goose is going to get to be a mother this year. I tried to put a pipped egg from my incubator under her today and she started attacking the pip and trying to...

If you have a small flashlight that has a lot of lumens, use that. I have a nice 200 lumens flashlight I got at Walmart that can see through even black copper marans eggs. I love the thing. Good luck and don't give up hope! With broodies I've found they almost always hatch on day 21 and not any...

I wouldn't worry too much yet. They can take longer than 21 days to hatch. Have you candled at all? If you're really worried and still aren't hearing anything by tonight you could always candle to see what's going on.

Lacie goose's egg is internally pipped! The little gosling in there is peeping at me :) Mine in the incubator is internally pipped, too. I see a happy goose in my future. My broody BO is definitely in it for the long haul, so tonight she gets the twelve guinea eggs that have been in my...

I would say the one with the big head spot was definitely male. Crested cream legbar hens are only single barred, so they can only pass their barring to their male offspring, and it always passes, so males are always barred, and it's impossible for females to be barred. I'm not sure if the tiny...

Unfortunately really no way to tell for sure which egg each chick came from. But with those roosters, if any hatched from cream legbar eggs, they would be sex linked, with males having a head spot and barred feathers and females not.
