We have no idea what happened....just found her pecking at the chicks. Found the shell the first time, but not the second time. She is sitting on the rest of the eggs content again. I hope it was just something like that and the rest will be fine until hatch day. She was such a great mama...
I posted on a new thread, but I am not really getting any answers, so I thought I would try here. I have a second time broody sitting eggs for 19 days now and today we caught her eating two chicks each about an hour apart. I don't think they hatched on their own, I think she broke into them...
Everyones new chicks are so adorable!! I have 4 - almost 3 week old chicks. I have a question. My mama seems to be losing ALOT of feathers, do new mamas molt after they have hatched chicks successfully?
I would leave the alone for another 2 or 3 days. We just had our first hatch and it started on day 23 and continued one egg a day for the next four days. So as someone so wisely told me on this thread....Be patient it will happen!
It sure did! She is a great Mama, nobody has even tried to pick on a chick. The little ones squirt all over the coop and run and nobody pays any mind to them. Although our rooster has taken to pecking on mom. He just walks up to her and pecks, sometimes pulling out a feather but no blood so...
