Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

well they had a short outing today. Mama was SOOO excited, all she did was take a couple steps out of the kennel and started to dust bathe! It was so funny. A few of the chicks ran out, and right back in, they did that a few times. Only 1-2 month old chick tried to go in the kennel and she...

I think for now I've decided to do daily outings. Just for a few minutes at a time for Mama to stretch her legs, and for the babies to get used to being out. These chicks are special and I do NOT want to risk losing them so yeah..supervised visits while I'm out with them.

Yes! Mine was moving around. I would go peek and she would be looking completely the opposite direction. She never stopped turning the eggs or anything. (like we do when incubating). LOL Now she is up moving around and talking to the babies. Its been 4 days. OK, so here is what I did. I...

OK, so I don't know what I need to do now. I ended up taking my broody out of her outside brooder and putting her in the house the day the chicks were hatching because she was getting a little active with the babies that had already hatched and left the freshly hatched, and last egg exposed. It...

OK, there she is! I moved mama and babies though because I walked outside and #4 had just hatched and she scooted herself to the food to eat. You could see she was trying to drag them with her, but freshly hatched baby, and last pipped egg were left behind and it is COLD. I don't know if she...

I have to come back and say this is 1,000,000 X better than hatching in an incubator. I just can't explain how excited I am. My DH told me "Congrats" because I was just squeeling out of nowhere!

I HAVE BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 so far! WOOOOO! Pics when the rest finish hatching. Praying that they DO hatch! Mama does NOT want me messing with her, but I had to go clean the poop from under her. She had done a 180 in the brooder so she could poop and it was right behind her so...

I have no idea! LOL In the incubator, this would be a yes. Although moving them when they are positioning themselves to hatch might not be a good thing. I hope its OK! And this made me want to not touch mine again since I have no idea when I'll find one pipped! LOL keep us updated!

Well, the fact that this broody made it to today with all the bad aircells is amazing. My incubator surely killed all my last eggs. It makes me sad that the eggs I have in the incubator now can't be put under her too, but they were 2 weeks behind! LOL I'm not sure I'll ever use an incubator...
