I am at Harrington, north of City Park. We won't be hatching many duck eggs, last year we only had two hatch, I will let you know what we get. They are Pekin. Keep us posted on your chicks!

That is how I acquired our first chicks. We hatch chicks in our kindergarten class and two of the ECE classrooms do too. I picked 6 out of about 20 chicks and I managed to get 5 roosters! I hope you have better luck than I did. This year we are also hatching ducks which I will be looking to...

Any suggestions on what to do with an 8 week old rooster? I am in the city limits and cannot have him, and he has started to crow in the mornings. I had suspicions early on and now I regret not doing something about it then, now he is too big to cull easily and I can't keep him till he is big...

I bought three pullets from her two years ago also. They were healthy, the EE had been pecked pretty badly but her feathers came back and she was one of my best layers until a fox killed her.

Picked up my chicks today from Elizabeth; three EEs, a Dark Brahma, and a White Rock. I decided to try out the EcoGlow brooder this go around. I was worried that they wouldn't go under it but after about 15 min of exploring their new home they have all settled underneath and are so quiet! I...

Hi guys, I thought I would post this here and on FB. I have two hens I will be needing to find homes for in the next few months. City limits restricts me to 8, so with new chicks I have to part with these two. Both will be 2 years in May. One Buff Orpington (Ginger) and one Blue Wyandotte...

I am having Ameraucana envy! If you decide you have a pullet that you happen to want to sell (I can dream right?) I would love a real Ameraucana. I was hoping to buy some lavender Ameraucana eggs this year and give them to my always broody hen but after hearing about a poor hatch rate on...

I gave in last night and put a heat lamp up, I nailed it up with U-nails so there is no chance of it falling down. I have 4 out of 6 that are molting, one is pretty bare, so I was really doing it for them. They hang out in front of the lamp so I think I did the right thing for them. I always...

Thanks guys. I am doubtful that it was a dog. The only way in is through my neighbor's yard and over our joint fence. We have loose dogs in the hood but they usually try to dig under the fence not jump into one yard and then into the other yard. And my dogs would have gone crazy. I have...

I haven't posted in a while, been busy with school. Tonight we had our first predator attack. We are pretty sure it was a fox, broke the necks of both of my EEs. Totally my fault, I hadn't locked up their run when it got dark. Luckily my DH heard the ruckus and went out, saved my Buff...

Yes! I have a Cuckoo Marans that decided to go broody at 5 months! Then one of my older hens who frequently goes broody thought she should join her. They spent a few days in the A-frame tractor with no nest boxes. It didn't take much to break her of it. The older one is much more determined.

Coco my Cuckoo Marans laid her first egg today! I almost didn't see it in the run because is blended with the mulch. I am surprised she is already laying, even though her comb has been red for a while. She is only 16-17 weeks old. Doesn't that seem young? Hoping her egg color will darken a...

Another question for everyone...I have a year old Buff Orpington, Ginger, that has always laid a nice big egg about every other day. Lately she has been randomly laying an egg in the pen/coop/run and then goes into the nest box and lays another egg that is soft and usually broken. They have...

I am pretty sure it is a pullet, no crowing and no male feathers growing. I posted her picture a few times on the breeds/gender forums and everyone has always thought pullet. She is also starting to crouch down when I go to pick her up. Do roosters do that? I was skeptical for a while but...
