Oh my gosh, that little bantam next to the big red is so stinkin' cute! Here's one my of new hatchlings, a BLRW:

Really? I'm curious here. I did the same and was really happy with the results. The eggs didn't roll everywhere, and I thought clean up was easy.

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

So I had only 6 eggs make it to lockdown. Today is day 21. I've had 2 BLRW hatch, although one is pretty weak. All of my Maran eggs are totally silent. I'm frustrated because on day 18 they were rocking, and 1 chirped enthusiastically for 3 DAYS, but it's now been still and silent since midday...

That little chick is LOVELY all dried off! I was gonna say earlier...those are some big feet! I can't wait for mine to hatch *sigh*

Congrats on your new chicks! I don't use cartons, but for lockdown this time, I'm placing each egg in a cupcake liner. I figure they'll still have room to move, but hopefully it will keep the hatched chicks from flipping over the pipping eggs, and kicking them all to the sides of the bator...

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

Aw. Sorry to hear you had a bad hatch. My very first hatch was pretty bad. I was crushed. But the few that made it were spoiled to bits. Here's hoping our BLRW hatch well! Those were the eggs I was most excited about, so I'm on pins and needles. I feel kind of bad that I'm less excited about...

I have BLRW due that day too! Welcome! I actually only have 2 BLRW left out of the original 8. I pulled out another quitter when I candled tonight. But I still have lots of the other eggs. So excited for lockdown!

Love the pic of the chick just hatched! This makes me so excited for my hatch next week!

2 pips! Exciting! When did you set those bantam eggs? I have 2 bantams in the bator, and I'm wondering if I should put them into lockdown with the earlier batch. My chicks have always hatched on day 20. I'm not sure why. I thought my thermometer might be reading a little cool, but when I...

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

It's not usually a production, but for me it is quite consuming. I obsess over it completely until it's over. Last year we tried to have a hatch day party, but this year my BF says no, because I ignored all the guests and just stared into the bator the whole time I do have a staggered hatch...

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

They're right, no need to worry. I've heard that a good trick with a still air hovabator is to get 2 thermometers. Place one on the incubator floor, and 1 on top of the eggs. Then average your temps so that 100.5 falls between what they read. 99.5 is totally fine, but they might be developing a...

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

I never expect more than a 50% hatch rate on shipped eggs, so it's not a big deal. I am hoping that at least 1 Polish egg develops though. I use an Incu-Brite candler. It was about $9, and it works extremely well for the price, plus it has a rubber lip to protect the eggs. I even saw moving...

I also candled 6 polish eggs that traveled from Oregon to NC. They're only on day 4, but they all looked totally clear. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to see something. The eggs are white and easy to candle. So yeah....3000 miles. Maybe that's a lesson learned.

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

Quote: I'm leaving town for 2 nights, and am only mildy panicked at not being able to hover and check my temps every 2 hours....only mildly panicked. But at least I won't be able to candle every day.

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

I just candled batch #1. There were several BLRWs developing, but I couldn't say for sure with any of the Marans. I may try again later and let my eyes adjust to the dark for a couple of minutes first. I think I found maybe 4 with blood rings, but I'm not sure. These would be these first eggs...

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

My hatch is quickly becoming a crazy staggered hatch. I've been planning to hatch on my birthday April 21, so I pre-ordered eggs from three different people, all set to arrive at the end of last week, so I could set eggs Saturday night. I want to wake up to fuzzy butts on my birthday morning...
