Three weeks nearly and one of the chicks was dead in the brooder. It was slow to develop and a bit miss shapened feathering wise. So sad. That leaves 5 nankin and 1 d'anver.
Culling is part of our responsibility. It is hard to find homes for mixed
breed roos. I can't beloved my newbys are 2 weeks old already. My meat bird chicks were picked up Tuesday and they are already bigger than my two week old Nankins.
Sbucc: Congrats on your Nankin they are super friendly and the boys are really easy wegoing. Girls are notorious broody mommas.
Welcome johnhen and good luck on your quest.
After having these Nankin chicks I don't know how I can part with them.
Sometime chicks will have trouble walking. They kind of scoots or rock around on their hocks(elbows). When its a newborn it is usually not a big deal. Trouble hatching or last to hatch will have troubles sometimes. My rocker was on her feet after 24 hrs. Other illness can act like this but...
Oh they are soo cute. We just peeked in and momma's let us get a glimpse.
Serama Mom scratching around a bit.
D'Anver mom faithfully sitting on the last two eggs.
YIPPEEE!!
Just a quick update. There are 7 new chicks for two momma's. One has hock rocker which is being watched. Everyone...
HEY HEY HEY two egg shells are beside each broody momma. It is soooo cold here I don't have the heart to force a look at the babies but I hear little peeps from under momma. They are very upset that I even opened the door to the brooder coops. I slipped in my smallest feeders and waterers for...
Oh my word, waiting for babies is nerve racking. I have secured the converted hutch turned brooded for babies. I sure hope they really come this time. Arg. Both moms are sitting very well. Another Nankin is sitting on eggs that she is not supposed to. I take her off several times each day...
Yay for Nankins being official now. My broodies will be hatching next week if any of the eggs survived. It is hard to tell. I had to stop letting the hens share duties. The one girl kept stealing eggs from under the other after laying a new egg. I think I got it all sorted though.
I...
one of the Nankin hens has decided to be babysitter when the serama gets up to eat and drink. I guess it is like tagging in. I didn't know they would share these duties.
Love the world domination plan Griff.
As luck would have it two of my hens are broody on eggs. A serama and a d'anver. Soooo I slipped the Nankin eggs I was saving for the incubator under the broodies instead. Yipee! If I get babies they will be up for sale locally.
Thanks all. I only have enough birds for my own use starting with a trio. I have plans to try to incubate a batch and am not expecting big numbers. I dont ship but will drive to meet someone preferrably at a small animal swap meet. My DD class just hatched out some of my Easter Eggers. 5...
This was the only Nankin pic she took. Clyde is in the forground and the show cages are in the background. She does not take pictures very well yet. Ha Ha! A lot of blurry birds.
Dear Clyde received a first place but Chloe was the big winner with Best of Breed and Best Variety. I'll snap a picture tomorrow. Too tired to move tonight. Good night.
okay hear is the little breed class winner he he.
