The top two chicks, they don't look like Welsummers, more like Welsummer crosses or hatchery stock red layers. I know it is several years old but what do they look like now as matured adults?
Most of the old breeders ARE on FB. We have a devoted group of Welsummer folks on there. Look us up if you want to learn more about the breed. BYC isn't what it used to be and I am not on here for a long time due to PETA/HSUS/radical pet groups overtaking some of the forums. We have someone new...
For those of you who haven't heard yet, the Welsummer Club has lost two of it's most stalwart supporters Susan Graves and Trisha Dusil in a matter of a few weeks from each other. Be at peace, my friends!
Yes most certainly a Barnvelder crossed over Welsummer. A few breeders attempted to cross Welsummers over Barnvelders.......indeed, it was a BAD idea.
Other than that, enjoy them as egg laying flock!
I agree...no need to pass down the nasty temperment to his offsprings nor getting yourself or your children attacked by an over protective rooster. A roo just like that would end up in my stew pot. There are plenty of really nice roosters to choose from.
Sorry, no breeder in AZ but there is one in California if you would make a trip! There are several more in Washington state if you want to take a vacation!
If you can, sprinkle some Sevin's Dust or spray some Adam's Flea/Tick under their armpits. I find it worked very well. He could have gone thru a molt the way the feathers look like.
As for the toenail, I am guessing an injury.
And yes, the thread can get a bit sleepy at times but a bit more...
I had a five year old hen that laid everyday until she turned five, laid every other day until around eight years old? she passed on. Calicowoods lines.
From what you are reading, sounds like a hatchery bird or just that particular bird that decided to go hen-o-pause.
We still have a long ways to go. There are a few of bantam breeders here, two are SDW breeders and one Partridge breeder. I no longer breeding Welsummer bantams but I do have one hen left that lays a light tint egg. A breeder in Indiana has some of the Van't Weistande bantams but he has been...
I know! Even the owls take a fancy to them!
The Silver Duckwings, I babysat them, they are cute and very friendly birds. More than my Partridge ones LOL. They all came from the same origin (breeder) Erhard............
I am debating on getting some of Andre's stock again......I'm regretting...
The second pic I don't know...but her chest to lower torso or body looks like someone took a string or a belt and tried to split her into two instead of a nice rounded chest to pelvic area. I agree with Bjorn's comments. And a bit of cushion as well (problematic in some lines!). Wait a while and...
I agree, so many people were disappointed with any hatchery Welsummers and some are fine with the colors they got. If you want consistency, you would not want hatchery stock. You would be expected to pay a bit more for them. Some of the breeders are trying to get the SOP and dark eggs up to par...
Just let us know when you get them! I would love to make comparisons between the Americans, the Dutches, the Germans and the British Welsummers. All I know that the German Welsummers would be darker in plumage.
Glad you are getting them, now we can send future buyers to your location. So many...
