If the hooves feel hot to touch then founder may be your problem. They are proned to go lame and get around on their knees. Take all grain away and lower the protein level. An Epsom salt drench will help . Supply a good salt block.

No argument here. As I said in my original statement entero is usually the result of nutrition and or stress. From coast to coast the pasture will vary and so will the magnesium and selenium levels in the soil. My pesky goats went through the fence yesterday and pruned the hedge.

Cassie whilst I respect your opinion , Pat Colebys been at it awhile longer and so far her advice on goats , horses and cows has been invaluable. The sad fact is that most of it comes down to nutrition, and most goats that are in the final stages of life will actually be afflicted by entero. But...

Pat Colebys ' Natural goat & alpaca care ' second edition is a good source , but I'm yet to see an all natural wormer that works. I use Terramycin in foot abscesses , eye infection and horn loss. It is the most valuable item in my first aid box. We use it on poultry, horses , dogs and goats.

Entero toxemia ( pulpy kidney ) is caused by the organism ' clostridium welchii ' and or ' perfringens ' D. Both are inhabitants of the gut. Only when the goat is under nutritional or other stress- usually worms - do they start to proliferate and in turn give off the deadly toxin. Worming goats...

Goats waste a lot of hay at our place, that was until we made hay racks. We also made a feeder by using a length of galvanised guttering. Blocked the ends up and hung it on the fence. We only feed a 12% protein pellet when we don't have time to make up their regular feed. Which goes as follows...

Once an udder is full it must be milked normally, otherwise it becomes engorged and this can result in them never being milked properly again. Apples are fine if you drop them on the ground and stomp on them. But feeding too many apples can lead to digestive problems in any stock. Our neighbour once had a full grown steer choke on an apple and I nearly lost one of my angoras when she swallowed the stem of a cabbage. Raw fruit , if...

I would be more inclined to take a small bucket of goat pellets and let each child feed one handful each. I take my secatuers down to the blackberry bushes and get them a bucket of leaves. Goats only have a single row of teeth so raw fruit isn't chewed sufficiently and is risky in volume.

:welcome. Goats are far less intimidated if you get down to their level. Find yourself a comfy place and sit with a little bucket of pellets. Let them size you up and don't annunciate any contact , just let them . I have a park bench in the pen and I take a magazine and coffee and just sit with...

Angora are timid goats. They are nothing like the obnoxious but loveable boar. They are also high maintanence , compared to other breeds. This is ' wombles ' I nursed her back from bloat and she is now very tame. Loves to have her face scratched but only by me.
