My incubator's still in storage (to prevent me from hatching until spring LOL). However, a few hens went broody so I did get some chicks in the fall. Here's my youngest serama chick at 9.5 weeks. Still rather small, so she'll have to stay that way to help me pretend that I have a fluffy...

Very clever. I had a good chuckle b/c we have the same freezer! (Got it free from someone else's basement when they were cleaning out.) Still works, so no brooder here - yet. LOL

Well, first you have to plug it in to see if the temp holds steady. Then load it up and count to see if it will hold 100 eggs.... or more. Then of course you have to hatch those eggs - call it a trial.

I ended up getting one more chick. My last hatch is now done and the incubator got unplugged. Time for me to clean it and put it in the attic. (so I will not be tempted to do another "last hatch") Final results: 5 silver laced orpingtons 3 black/lav split orpingtons 3 lavender orpingtons 2...

Last few eggs remain in the incubator - one is zipping now. The others may not hatch, but it doesn't hurt to keep the incubator plugged in for another day or 2. I started moving some chicks in with their mamas today. (2 whites & a black went in last night and were already bonded by this...

This is what I mean. These pics were taken only a few seconds apart. In the 1st pic the incubator light is on. The last egg in the back right has a pip but it cannot be seen at all. This pic is the same view but with a flashlight. That back right egg has a thin hairline pip on its right...

Thanks and You're welcome. Here's what a pip looks like: Look at the 6 eggs in the carton. 2 are pipped. Can you find them? The middle one in the back row is easy to spot. The middle egg in the front row is also pipped. (BTW_ I write on my eggs to track things. The circle is week 1 air...

Your eggs are probably right on time. If temps are just a little low, they can be a couple days late. If the eggs are responding to sound, then all is well. They should start pipping soon. Often you can't see the tiny pips. It may only be a tiny hairline scratch on the surface that can only...

My "last hatch" is due tomorrow night or Tues. I have 3 broody hens (a laced orp, a HUGE 10lb black orp, and a med penciled rock) waiting to adopt whatever hatches. In the incubator I have black, lavender, & laced orpingtons, plus a few serama eggs. It will be another interesting mix.

:goodpost: I may have to borrow that one! At some point I clean out the incubator and must store it in the attic until spring. This is the only thing that can help me resist the temptation. :lau Yep. The incubation addiction is still a growing issue.

Aug 11-12th was my "last hatch." Everything went fine, and my fav experienced broody hen adopted the chicks. However the rest of the flock took my words as a mere suggestion. I may be done with chicks but 3 large determined hens have broody fever. I can't break them, so guess what?! My...

One problem: This thread is filled with enablers. ;) On the plus side, you'll get to know plenty of happy people who share your love for incubation and may even learn new ways to increase your hatch rates!

How long can eggs in the incubator go without being turned? I put some in at a preschool on Thurs night. On Sat, someone called to tell me that the temp & humidity were perfect, but the turner wasn't working. She was on her way out the door & yesterday was Easter. I went in this morning &...

Thanks. One of these lav orps came from that last egg. Can't tell which one at this point. The 2nd to last chick is one of these black chicks: They're all sweet little chicks. I'm happy the last 2 crawled out on their own after I assisted. I'm even more grateful that they didn't need...

53 hrs after the 1st chick hatched, I decided to peek into the 2 unhatched - but still living - eggs. 1. It had made a small pip which I slowly peeled away shell with foreceps. The shell seemed more dense than the others. I removed the top shell above the air cell line, moistened the membrane...

So here's a situation for those advanced hatchers: My Thanksgiving chicks hatched Wed-Thurs. Wed afternoon & eve = 6 early chicks Thurs morning = 3 chicks on time Thurs late afternoon = 2 more chicks Normally by now any eggs left would be quitters. Just now I candled before tossing & the...

Ok, so I fell off the wagon. I couldn't wait until the Easter Hatch-a-long, so I some eggs last week. Then, I was offered more Bielefelder eggs - for free. Somehow those eggs found their way into my incubator. Now my small test hatch of 6-12 chicks is up to 35 eggs incubating. Not...
