Been a while since I posted on this thread. Been an exciting year so far for us. Set 14 eggs (8 silkie and 6 serama), messed up my humidity and lost all but 4 silkies and 1 serama. Set 12 Serama and 3 silkie eggs from california (very long shipping and took a day longer than hoped in the...

Nothin like a good ole 12/20ga shotgun. Much easier to hit a small target with a spread of pellets if your not a good shot. Lol I also have to agree. A strong run/coop is a great defense... ours stopped a pit bull this week. Thankfully.

the tacks was a sarcastic comment. Sorry if it came out as for real. I get frustrated with animals bothering my chickens/dogs/fish/etc however unless they are actually harming them, it's all good. Just dont want a mass slaughter of my silkies from a dog that isnt kept properly. Good idea on...

Hey! We're new too. Started with a small "tractor style" coop/run and now have a 20x20 completely enclosed run and 3 level coop. My advice go bigger than you think you'll need. Our 5 is now 7 adults. 4 silkie chicks and a new breed for us seramas, one hatched and have 12 more in the incubator...

Came home on lunch break to find a beautiful brindle Pit attempting to access our run... Thankfully it's dual layered with heavy gauge wire fence on the outside and 1" chicken wire on the inside... So she was denied access, thank god... first attempt she just mocked me and ran off... then she...

These stupid hawks are getting on my last nerve. We lost our 2nd chicken to a hawk murder today. Our big crest silkies must have felt safe going up to the hawk outside the enclosed run and was murdered by said hawk trying to have an easy lunch. Guess I have more work to do on the run. :(

Sorry it happened... We just had a juvenile silkie get taken on thanksgiving with only a handful of feathers as sign of any struggle... Decided that day we would finally get around to enclosing our run area. The 2 days later once it was finished, we had a hawk perched on top of the run...

Eliminating the part from the PO to my house on a truck should help, have a heat pad being sent with them, and its about a 6 hour one way trip if they came direct... I'm hoping they do okay. Wish I could just go pick them up but 12-13 hour drive time and driving a Jeep (rough and cold in the...

I plan to have them in the house in a brooder once hatched. Dont think they will survive the winter without having a year under their wings. They are going to a large incubator to grow. Once hatched, I'll bring them home :D They are coming from about 6 hours away in Indiana, so I am really...

Thanks for the input. Should have set this up a month ago when it was warmer. Oh well. My friend will incubate them and will likely just raise them in the house will old enough to move in with the big girls. Serama's and Silkies so I know the Serama's are much more susceptible to colder temps...

With our arctic temperatures coming this week. Is it safe to place eggs under a broody hen? We're showing teens and a high of 5 one day coming up. Or should I have a friend who is running an incubator cabinet try and incubate them for me? 8 silkie eggs and 6 serama eggs.

@chickendreams24 your quotes reply above was a work of art! Love it! Yes we are in town flock owners. Galesburg has pretty simple rules to comply with so it works out perfect for us. Sorry about your loss. I know I would be sitting with the 20 ga waiting for preditors if the city would let me.

I've been at work since 445 this morning. So haven't gotten to see our chickens and the snow yet. However my wife said they ran out of the coop this morning all excited and stopped at the snow line. Baffled, looked back and forth and decided to go back in the coop and stay in the covered area...

We're in the same boat. Our silkies decided to hang out in the coop when my wife opened the door to their run this morning. What I've been told/read. They will probably stay out of the weather a lot of times. You might have to clear some open ground for them to go outside once the snow piles up.

Awesome. Funny small world. My wife travels to Janesville for work with home run auto group (she works for an IT company that works with them). Would love to chat in the spring about possibly getting additional eggs. Sorry about your loss this year. We've only lost one and it was horrible...
