    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

I can't believe I though my Mallards were Rouens. Now that I have other ducks, I can see how small they really are. Abba is 3 times their size, easily. They're still laying eggs like crazy for me, though. Peek still lays an egg a day, faithfully. She's missed a couple of eggs in the past 4...

Drakes can and will kill ducklings. You'll want to keep them separated until they're around the same size that he is.

That's a really good question. I don't know how it works.

Good to know. I wouldn't want to get in trouble for owning wild mallards!

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Now that the "little" girls have grown up, I have re-re-evaluated the breed of my two older ducks. They are definitely mallards. The rest of my ducks are twice their size. I didn't realize how tiny they were until I saw my seven-week-old Blue Swedish towering over them. They don't have clipped...

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Pretty sure it's two stripes on the Rouen vs one stripe on the Mallards. Unfortunately, I didn't have my two girls when they were little. They DO have a faint second stripe, though.

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

So, I'm pretty sure my "mallards" are not, even though I thought they were. They've really bulked up now that they're a year old, and I think they're a lot bigger than a mallard would be. They also don't have clipped toes, and since they came from the feed store I would guess they'd have that...

With that mix, I'd love to see how he looks when he's fully feathered!

He looks like a Silver Appleyard, to me. They have mallard "markings", but not the proper color. He's MUCH too light to be a mallard. Do you have pics of him now?

No drake feathers, either. I'm not sure of the voices, because Peek is really loud. I'll have to see if I can tell if both of them are quacking.

No pictures today, because I was holding peas in my hand, trying to get Peek and Poke to eat from my hand. BOTH of them snagged a couple of peas out of my hand today! They don't like to do it, though. They much prefer that I toss the peas into the water pan. Also, I've noticed Poke mounting...

They let me get right up next to them today. Still won't take food out of my hand, but they'll look at it really hard and think about it!! Maybe tomorrow. Bath & Pea Time are pretty popular now.

This is the closest they've ever let me get to them. There are peas in the water bucket. :D The lighter one is Peek, the darker is Poke.

Thanks! The biggest problem with this is that it has gotten me hooked on ducks. More coming in April.

    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

These are my two girls, Peek and Poke. I haven't been able to get any decent pictures of them because they really don't like me. They're rescue ducks... our neighbors moved out and left them behind. I couldn't just let them starve, so we adopted them. I have an area of the yard fenced off so the...
