    Growing fodder for chickens

Cool helps with mold, but too cool and it wont grow. I would say 60 is pretty ideal but it has to have light. Depending on where you are you could pout it outside during the day away from the kiddos and bring it in at night.

But I purposefully left the exclamation point off at the end of the last sentence....C'mon I toned it down a tad at least....lol

Oh I have had two different girls lay two a day before. It really does happen! Just one time each, it was so weird! Then my GSL and Delaware are on some sort of clock, they lay at daybreak every single day with no misses. A lot of my others seem to be an about a 26 hour cycle, it gets later...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I have just been spreading the soaked wheat seeds out until there are no bare spots, spreading it around with my hand, I am guessing it is 1/2 inch thick in most spots. I am excited to try other types of seeds, I have only done the wheat with little bits of barley and boss sprinkled in. My trays...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Good point Spangled. They are nearing three months old in a week, 2 polish and 1 naked neck. I have been putting starter out for them, through a small doorway only they can get to so the big girls don't eat the starter, and I have noticed they are not eating much of it since I started the...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Ok Thanks for the quick response! Just making sure I had the quantity right. It really is saving me quite a bit on feed. The nursery flat takes 1 quart of dry grain...so I am only paying for 1 quart per day of wheat and they ate only 1/4 of the feed last week that they were eating before...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Question---I have been feeding my girls the fodder every day for a week. The size is the greenhouse flat....and I have 29 girls, 4 of which are teenagers. I put the whole flat out, and it seems like it may be too much. They pick at it for a few hours, then about 1/2 is left....then...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Thanks for the info! So I mix it, let it sit in the dark uncapped, with paper towel over...then when I see the swirl cap it and it is good to go. I am so doing this, I keep meaning to and just put it off. I give my chickens ACV all the time, but the Bragg's is harder to find, so this is a...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Holy Cow! That is amazing! I finally planted two trays tonight. I had the seeds soaking for three days! I hope they will still be ok. Just got busy and kind of forgot about them, then too busy, then forgot...again :P We have two daughters having babies next month so have been showering...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Called IFA today, to make sure they had it in stock....red wheat $12.99/50#, white wheat $14.99/50#, (I think I have it in the right order) barley 13.79/50#. So I am thinking I will get a bag of the cheaper wheat, then a bag of the barley, and sprinkle a little of the soaked barley seeds on top...

I could totally see why a few of you would aorry about nutritional balance...I am this way, want them to have everything perfect to get the best health. I have to say though, I am in complete trust of this gal's feeding methods, for only one reason....I have seen her birds and they are the most...

Chris09, the info on the first couple pages will explain :) (hydroponic growing.) The depth of the seeds will contribute to the moisture evaporation, acessibility to light for the bottom seeds, etc. so for sure there has to be an ideal depth---too many seeds would contribute to rot/mold on the...
