Any idea what the cause of them rotting could be? Is it because they were on the dirty side?

This is what happened when I went to add the safety hole: this liquid started fizzing and bubbling out of the shell, with an atrocious scent.

Note to self: don’t ever add a safety hole to a potentially rotten egg in your bedroom.

Do you mean like a human took Joy out, or something else? I didn't take Joy (or Hope) outside of the nest, but perhaps Pebbles left the nest, and they followed? I ended up putting her in a (fairly large) dog crate in the coop with some food and water.
