Oh my gosh! I thought you meant the first white hen was fat ... then nope, I thought it was the second white hen. But that third white hen ... My meat birds were half that fat when I put them out of their misery.

When raised by their moms, chicks will spend a lot of time "out in the cold," even in the middle of winter. Then they go under her to warm up or sleep. I think a couple hours at room temps won't hurt a bit. I've had chicks hatch from eggs that were allowed to cool completely several times...

Just because it is Chinese doesn't mean it is necessarily crap, but it does mean it has to travel an unnecessarily long distance to get to your North American coop ...

I learned how from this video: I found that the bones and connective tissues of a cockerel are much sturdier than a store-bought meat bird ... x 10 for free-range turkeys.

Debone a whole bird. Then it can be stuffed with any number of things and roasted. I deboned two cockerels for Christmas dinner. One was 3 lbs, the other was 5 lbs. I roasted them in a bag, but from now on will use a pot roaster. They were DELICIOUS!

Are there still tanneries in the USA? They don't smell very good and people get all bent about the animal ethics and get all NIMBY about it (yet still covet the $50,000 Birken bag they saw in Vogue ...) Haven't we pretty much exported all that "unpleasantness?" There used to be a tannery in my...

Actually, I didn't. There is an active discussion about this issue elsewhere ... like for people using the BioPod to farm BSF. The advice elsewhere is to be careful. I think it is good advice for people here, too.

Well ... If it only takes 5 "bad" BSF larvae to poison a duck, I do believe it is important to "be careful."

Posting this here as an inspiration to be practice good management with maggot farms if you choose to take advantage of the "free" protein produced that way ... one popular source has amended his article on how to farm maggots at this link...

This is exactly why I segregate my broodies ... even marking their eggs doesn't work for long-term to make sure we don't gather them, and my flock seems to be attracted to nesting boxes that look "good" because someone else is already in them. If think if it were me I'd let her sit, see what...

Yeah, I only buy cane sugar when I buy sugar. The Diamond V company lists the various growing media for their various products, which is interesting reading. They are OMRI listed for their organic products. I do not trust imported organics much, but would vastly favor products imported from...

Ha! you got ahead of me! I edited my post to address that, and also the touchy subject of soy. My thinking is that feed-grade yeast products are probably less expensive than human grade. Here is a cool article discussing the use of the Original XPC product as a human nutritional supplement...

More on supplements ... One of the supplements I've been looking into (for various reasons, but this was back when I was searching for a practical niacin supplement for the ducks, and I'm not sure this product is even good for that was) yeast supplements. BUT ... it seems to do a lot of things...

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking, too. It's one of the reasons I've gone "scant." If birds free-range a lot they get more minerals, too. Fermenting improves the nutritional value of the feed, but it also improves the digestive system of the bird so the bird absorbs stuff better. I can't...

I did the math, too. I figured my math out in "doses" ... if a bird eats 1/3 a lb of feed per day, how much NutriBalancer would be in that? Then I add it to the fermented feed treat I've been giving the flock every day ... That way it gets distributed through & sticks to the feed. So far I've...

Thanks! And ... We are in the nursery business, so have access to ... everything. Lots of it for "free." I'm going to plant some persimmons, figs, pawpaw, mulberries, kiwi, any Oregon native that fruits, chestnuts, maybe some hazelnuts ... And normal stuff like more plums, peaches, pears. I'm...

Yes. Like that thread shows, there is a pasture for the birds ... But we've expanded it a lot since then. Some birds escaped the pasture and free range and sleep in other coops, but most stay in the pasture. We are going to start a pasture expansion project very soon. I've posted some photos...
