My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

Brief update: When I came home Monday afternoon, the Chukar was gone. I checked the area just to make sure there wasn't any kind of foul (or should I say fowl play?) and couldn't find any. I did say it was voluntary confinement, so I said my farewell and let the chickens out. Not ten seconds go...

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

FREEEEEDOMMMMMMMMMMMM! Today I release the Chukar from quarantine to general population consisting of 3 chickens. I consider it to be in voluntary confinement as the run is only partially covered on top for now, and should it decide it wants out, it has that option. I was a bit nervous...

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

The Chukar escaped! Sort of. I went to move it to a temp cage and made it through the gap in the lid. Arrrrgh! It proceeded to sing on top of a tree until it flew down and started hanging out again. It took a bit more effort this time but he's back in captivity, with extra mealworms...

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

Dora'smom : I don't know which Portland you live in, but I live in the Portland, Oregon suburbs, and I know that Coastal, and I think Wilco both have sold Chukkars in the spring. I've not seen an adult before, but that was nice of you to take the bird in. Hello fellow Oregonian! Yes it's the...

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

I can't tell you how weird it was. I sit out there frequently so I get to see all kinds of wild birds flutter about and here's this thing pecking about in the yard, and then looks over to us and makes a b-line right to the run. The alpha hen was all baaaaAAAAAWK but shut up after the first hour...

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

Quote: Yeah, I decided to take him. He hung right outside of the chicken run for two hours plus and it was starting to get dark out so I decided to go ahead and capture it. Poor thing wanted to join my hens from the look of it. I have it temporarily set up in the old brooder with food and...

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

I have it set up in my old 2x4x2 brooder pen I built. I took a throw blanket to transfer the bird from under the light box to the enclosure. I need to do more research on the bird.

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

All right, I caught it using an old light box from my photog stash. Worked great. Now what? I suppose I can put it in the ooh unused brooder for quarantine. Can they eventually share the run or even coop?

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

Quote: I don't have a net I went away for a little bit and came across the bird at the front gate to my run. I stopped about 12' from it, and it shortened the distance by half. Won't let me get any nearer, but here it is almost 2hrs, lol. Any clue as to gender?

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

Quote: I was thinking it was some kind of game bird. It's WAY too human friendly. I'm in Portland, and the link supplied for the ID shows it more of a eastern Oregon bird. It's practically right next to me as I type. The BO is talking to it, lol.

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

RockinCRanch and Constance nailed it. Thank you for the link! For what it's worth, it's still watching, and from the looks of it, wants IN. Been hanging out for almost 1.5 hours now.

My hens have a visitor, what it is? UPDATE #2

__________edit_update#2_pic on pg 5_________________________________________ A quick update. It's been just about 4 weeks now since the chukar has been mingling with the 3 chickens. It's still around and appears to be a success! I kept the chukar in the coop for a week while the girls go...
