How can you leave them out so late with out the threat of predators?
Once yours get us to being inside hopefully they will start going in on their own if they are too cold outside. Most of mine go in on their own and seem to do fine without food and water till daylight the next morning.
I get put up earlier than normal when wind is blowing hard and it's down into 20 which mean wind chill is in singles. I start around 3:30 in the afternoon and everyone is in by 4-4:30 chickens go in by themselves Runners and Muscovy's have been going in on their own Geese I walk behind and put...
Evidently you've never had a duck injure a leg from jumping from too high a height but that doesn't mean we shouldn't use precautions to keep our birds from injury if we can help it. It's out responsibility to keep them safe. Heavier breeds can have leg injuries. Of course up to OP what she /he...
Probably is my Drake weighed 15lbs and he was up in years, but ducks legs aren't real sturdy anyway so jumping an landing on hard surface could cause injury. This height was probably 1.5' if they jump fly that's totally different.
Ducks legs can be injured if they jump from too high a height. My Muscovy drake jump off the side of his pool instead of using his ramp and limped around for a week or so before he was back to normal.
Wow that had to scare you. We have had dogs wander up here to I would never want to shot something but if it's going after my animals I won't hesitate.
That's scary any chance they can get fried. What about neighbors with dogs? I keep my scovy's home by clipping wings just too many things out there to let them fly.
The ramp looks good but like onaharley says you might want to put sides up. About as wide as a 2X4 or they may freak out if they are any wider ducks can be weird with anything new. [as you are finding out] And how about where the ramp comes to inside how easy it for them to get onto it?
As with anything to do with ducks they are wary of anything new so it will take time for them to get use to the ramp. Can you post a pic of their new ramp? how wide is it? Also left over asphalt roofing works good for ramps.
Red eyes = predator
Did you put strips of wood across the ramp to give them traction or you can cover in a scrap piece of carpet.
Can you prop the door open with something heavy? Or if it opens out use a bungee strap and support it open? by attaching it to the house somehow?
No if they can't get out by themselves then get them out and build a ramp soon as you can. That way they can go in if they want. See it didn't take them long to like their safe house.
On one of my doors I have a big hook and a thin chain and hook the door so it stays open if I don't some how the chickens manage to get the door closed.
Not so easy to see but maybe you can get an idea
Maybe you can do some modifications to the dog house and after they get us to it they will use it on their own. With the cold weather we're having and all the snow mine go in and out all day long and all are usually up own their own by 3:30pm all I have to do is lock the doors. But training is...
