Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Yes, that happens. Sometimes eggs gets stepped on or otherwise cracked and the momma will clean up the nest. Sometimes I wonder if they do it on purpose because they think there are too many eggs, or if they somehow know an egg is not fertilized.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

We all have different ways of doing things that work for us. Personally, I do not separate my broodies. I leave them in the spot they choose, so they just brood with the flock. I mark the eggs, and remove any new eggs every day (or 2 at most). When day 18 rolls around, I put up what I call a...

Since I didn't get a picture yesterday. I do not know why they are all hanging around in the run around the feeder... it is empty. Although they were all scratching around before I walked in.

I knew my Buff Orpington momma was very likely ready to venture out of the nest box today, so I opened it up and sure enough, she was very happy to take her little brood out and about. One of the little ones I put under her is not doing well, so I brought it back inside to do whatever I can for...

Oh, that silly Brahma!!! After several hours, she is now back on the nest! There was an egg in there, and she had it nice and hot when I pulled it out. I wonder if she actually did not even realize one of them had already hatched. Now I am going through all different scenarios in my head...

Ack! My remaining broody Brahma abandoned the nest!! She was trying to get out of the nest, so I moved the screen and she bolted and never came back. I guess she did not want the responsibility of actually raising the chicks. She had one chick actually hatched, and 4 remaining eggs. Three...

This little cutie made an appearance yesterday evening! So far, it is the only one I have seen, though I have heard more under this Buff Orpington and under the Buff Brahma. I also have 4 in the incubator I am planning on sneaking under someone. I just haven't decided who yet.

Things do happen. This is the first time we have ever had a problem with hens eating eggs. At least that I am aware of! I am positive the incubating eggs we not actually being targeted, they were simply being included in the egg eating. I really hope that the mustard eggs put a stop to it...

We had somewhat of a massacre in the hen house! When I found that broken egg under the Brahma, I thought she had accidentally stepped on it. It happens, and we have had it happen several times. Well, we had been finding them over the past few days, but then, we discovered that it was not...

Lol I used to write down the date the eggs were set under which hen on a calendar, and then just remember the order by which nest box they were in. Now I use the Hatchabatch app, so all I have to do is look at it. It also gives me reminders of the progress. All I need to remember now is the...

Thank you for the advice. I moved mama and eggs the other day after I came home and found the hens trying to eat a chick from an egg that was supposed to be under mama. I've had another hen go broody a week or so ago and another trying to now. I think they all want a go at it. Anyway, moving...

Well, I kind of messed up a little yesterday! I went out and discovered the Brahma momma with the late chicks off the nest. The eggs were cold to the touch, and there were 3 pips. One I could see the chick, and it was not moving. I thought the momma had given up, so I removed the eggs for...

I am afraid one clutch of eggs is all gone. They should have been hatching 2 days ago, and there has been nothing so far. The egg shell I saw was from a broken egg. I was afraid that may have been the case, because we went out of town one day and when we got back after midnight, we found her...

I wish I had come across the repurposed feed bags before. We recently threw away huge pile of them! We don't have them building up now, because we are no longer buying commercial feeds. I bet they would make good hen aprons as well!

I am a bit irritated tonight! Duke brought home 8 goose eggs from work today that should be hatching right now. It took me a little while, but I think I have the whole story straight. The brooding goose was being pecked up by the chickens and the goslings were being killed. The people...
