Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

A necropsy would cost upwards of $100, which I can’t afford at this time. 😣 I looked into it for the last hen I lost. I’m going to start a new thread for the sick chick I have inside. She’s gotten worse, and her eye is swelling. 😢

Right… thank you. I will make sure to get a wormer that isn’t too strong. I will see what this does… but I might go ahead and put her down anyway. It wouldn’t be good to extend her suffering when I'm not even sure she’ll get well.

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

That’s a shame… I have to do the deep bedding method. When I didn’t do that, they all got mycoplasma gallisepticum from a muddy poopy mess of a pen. I’ve still got a young one trying to fight it off, she’s inside too. Good to know that’s a common problem to watch for, though. I’ll try what I...

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

I just started one in their little greenhouse coop. The first layer of leaves is down, and I plan on continuing the deep litter. They also have a run they go in, that has wood chips and leaves, though not as thickly. They were on pasture this Spring and Summer, when the problems first started...

A couple of months ago, maybe. But she could very well have worms again. I’ve had the worst year for them. You think that could be causing the vent swelling? I can’t see the picture for some reason.

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

Thank you for your input. I was afraid of something like this being the case… I will put her down within a day or two before it gets any worse.
  7. Sunshine Chick

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

These are from today. It seems her vent is getting stiffer and harder to move… but I can hardly get any of that yellow scabby stuff off now. Some poop gets caught in her vent pretty regularly. I gave her the recommended treatment from the above post, from backyardchickens, except for the wheat...

These are from Sunday. There are definitely before and after pics here.
  9. Sunshine Chick

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

These pictures are from Saturday. From before and after I removed gunk and stuff from her vent, I believe. More pictures from later in the week to follow.

Okay, so Mikes falconry has some… for $40. With shipping it would be $50. https://www.mikesfalconry.com/product/medistatin-powder-used-for-the-treatment-of-candida-in-birds/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlr_Q5Zbk9AIVrWxvBB0MRQ2TEAQYAyABEgJXv_D_BwE I looked on backyard chickens and found a page detailing...

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

She is becoming more lethargic… wants to sleep more. I have stopped the hydrogen peroxide flushing. I’m just using heavily diluted oregano and coconut oil on her bum now.
  12. Sunshine Chick

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

I have not… I looked in farm stores and couldn’t find it. Where can I order some, and be sure it’s good quality? I imagine it’s like any other thing; you can get good quality, or cheap stuff. And I forgot about the coconut oil, I will do that now. I didn’t realize it would actually kill the...

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

Here are the pictures I took today, after I rinsed it once with hydrogen peroxide. I hadn’t removed any tissue yet. It seemed to “grow” back on the inside and the outside since I picked a lot of it out on Friday. I’m not sure if it’s just a dried excretion or actual skin on the outside, but on...

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

Okay, so I took some more pictures early Friday morning, after I soaked her in warm epsom salt water for 20 minutes and removed as much of the stuff as I could. Some of it seemed like whitish-yellow dead skin, that peeled off easily. Other parts were firmly attached and bled if I tried to take...

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

Hmm… okay, thank you! That was very informative. Knowing more possible causes as well as some more things to try as solutions is helpful. I will do the coconut oil and probiotics as well.

Chicken vent red and swollen, and yellowish inside. Stinks!

I might be able to get my dad to help me hold her so I can get better pictures. She seems to be pooping alright. She certainly pooped a lot last night and this morning!!! She does seem to strain some when she poops. I will compare her side-by-side with the healthy chicken vent of one of the...

You’re welcome! Thank you for that encouragement. I’m learning as I go. It took a few emergencies before I learned what info is needed right off the bat. I will try soaking her butt and see how that goes. Some seems stuck on, as though it’s part of her insides, other parts come off easily. I...
