I'm just full of questions the last few pages! I have one more... I got a new screened bottom board fro my hive! Yay! I think that the bees will like to have more air flow (its HOT where I live in the summer) and the added bonus of reducing/controling mites sounds good since I am paranoid about...

Quote: Bees who swarm aren't 'traitors', those were probably robbers being dealt with. It is the current queen who decides when to swarm if she feels the remaining colony will be strong enough to survive. If they were to swarm, you'd find queen cells, and as soon as they are capped, the queen...

My bees are acting kinda funny and I can't figure out why. This started at least a week ago. I was so focused on finishing my coop that I was not monitering the bees often enough. On Friday my roommate reported that they were acting strange, so I went out to find several large, swarm-like clumps...

Thanks for the tip! I will try it as soon as I get home and let you know if it works after the sting. The itching is driving me Maaaaaaad!

Yeah, my Dad doesn't seem to have any side effects from stings at all-lucky! But I react badly to mosquito bites and apparently bee stings. The one on my neck is not aweful- feels like a bad mosquito bite (swollen lump that itches) but my finger sting has swollen so badly I can barely bend my...

Last night I got my very first honey bee sting. And my second. (totally my fault I made them mad. I dropped the lid back onto the hive while I was checking on their progress and they rightly were agitated!) Up till now I have only ever been stung (8+ years ago) by yellow jackets (also not to...

My bees are happily buzzing around my garden, and my greenhouse (temporarily storing extra supplies) smells like honey I am pleasantly surprized by how much my colony has grown since I last saw them a month ago... I will have to add a second story soon. My new bees are very productive I will...

I'm getting bees at last! I met my swarm on sunday but I have to wait till my Dad comes to visit so he can deliver them (with a hand-me-down bee suit too!) so I have 2 weeks to prep. Dad caught them late last year and it was a small swarm so he wasn't sure they would survive the winter...but...

I know some blacksmiths who make mead. My parents once traded them a few gallons of honey for a few gallons of mead. I hear it isn't hard to make, but the flavor of the honey has a huge effect. Not sure what kind you should use I just know the batch of mead made from our honey (made from weeds...

My dad just called me last night and told me he was capturing a swarm. One of 3 on the same property. He was going to use an empty hive from one of the 2 swarms that died over the winter... but found BEES living in them again! So now he has 4 already, plus the new one, and today he is going...

So I have a question about top bar hives.... how exactly DO you get the honey? I hear folks say to crush the comb... this just sounds messy and inefficient. I am not too worried about how much my future hive will produce, but I do not want to waste their efforts. Does anyone have pictures? I am...

Thanks for posting that! Makes me feel a bit better. I am still outside the map (even if thats only because it ends at state lines) so I hopefully won't have to worry for a while. Great thing to have here, and I am sure it will help persuade the roomies that we need bees!

My Dad has lost hives to yellow jackets and had a lot of robbing done by hornets too, if I remember right. Mostly it was the small hives that were lost. He never lost a large, strong colony to invaders because the fight them off if they can. I have a question (from my skeptical room mates) no...

I will have to come back later to read all the posts, but I plan to get bees soon. I grew up with them, my Dad has a few hives he keeps as a hobby and i miss the fresh honey!
