Ok, sorry to just keep with the questions.. but do you think blue wheaten marans are generally darker layers than non-blue wheaten? Do you think darker layers produce fewer eggs?
I'm confused about it because I thought all blue was a heterozygous color. In other words you'd cross a black looking bird and a splash looking bird to get blue. So a blue wheaten rooster cross wheatens... 50% genetically "blue"? But I was looking at "Bev's Marans" website and it says...
I know.. I seem to know how to ask all the wrong questions.. but what happens when you run wheaten and blue wheaten marans together? Do you get a genetic mess?
Well I ordered some so I guess I'll see what I get for egg color and hatch. If they aren't any darker than what I've got I'll just be the sucker that over paid for more of what I all ready had.
I hope that's the case, but some variation in shade is fine with me too. I noticed on Fitzgerald's website they mention that the same hens that were laying 9 started laying 7 to 9 and I had read on another thread that hens lay lighter as they age so thought that was interesting but not a bad...
I only had two laying hens that I have now sold but both kept right on laying into winter as soon as they had supplemental heat. I'm assuming the red heat lamps don't provide enough "light" to change the equation. They quickly stop laying if not enough feed or protein or oyster shell.
Here is what that white looks like that I mentioned. I really like this little roo. He's been the biggest and calmest since hatch. But that white bothers me. One rooster without this problem caught up to him. It does seem to be decreasing. He's almost 8 weeks now.
Have you seen this before...
Thank you for your thoughts! Mine are just about 5 weeks so just getting feathered out still.
I think these light chest throat and face just at the comb feathers can affect adult color because I had a hen with some light color around her comb as an adult. Her coppery head color was just not...
I have a question about wheaten marans. My chicks tail shapes vary .. Sometimes the feathers at the top or middle of the tail grow in shorter or slower. Does this lead to problems in the adult tail? Should I be culling chicks with this kind if tail?

Thank you so much! You know I don't see anything morally wrong with breeding whatever one likes for their own chickens. I dont think it shows any lack of character or backbone or something like that for goodnessake!
But at the same time this was just a line of thought and question so I'm...
Thanks! So those are the first generation cross...are you planning to breed these hens back to a wheaten rooster? Would you expect problems with the resulting Wheaten colored offspring? I realize the off color black copper offspring are culls. I know plenty of people who do not own roosters...
