    Minorca thread!

Haven't been here a while so I thought I would give you all an update on our Minorcas we are raising currently. For the past few years we have been raising SC and RC Black Minorcas. Last year I added Blue Minorcas to the fold and am raising both SC and RC. Lastly, we obtained some of the finest...

Yes, I dont usually get into naming birds for the most part but he is such an awesome bird. Very tame and full of personality in spite of being near 12 lbs. El Cid was a historical figure from Spain who helped fight back the Moors from Spain. It is also a very good movie starring Charleton...

They can be referred to as Minorcas as the plural. Feel free to join. They are gorgeous birds, tall and majestic. Here is a pic of our old man, El Cid. He is a four year old SC Black Minorca Cock.

Minorcas came from Spain if my memory serves me correctly. Dan is the breed history guru to ask. Leghorns did come from Italy though.

See, I am not really a fan of the extra large earlobe that the European birds have. Their bodies are too small and head, combs and earlobes are disproportionately too large. Just my preference though.

There is a good chance you may have Blue Andalusians but Minorcas are also a possibility. There is a breeder here in the US who is working on LF Blue Minorcas but I also know none of his stock has left his farm as well so they cannot be his. He is in year two of the project and the birds look...

Buff breeds will occasionally have black feathers or specks show up in their plumage at times. Dan is the Buff expert on this though.

    Minorca thread!

I would not say there are any breeds that "make up" a Minorca. They are fairly distinct breed that can trace their origin to Spain and what contributed to their creation there would be a question better answered by Dan haha. Compared to other breeds like Wyandottes, Rocks, Sussex, Orpingtons...

Dont believe they exist?! They have been in the American Standard for over a century. Look thru the thread there are pictures of some good ones raised by Tom Roebuck here in a America.

One crooked toe is more indicative of an occurance in hatching rather than anything genetic. If he was all you have then I would certainly use him. That is just me though..

Thought I would share a couple pictures of some of our Minorcas. First picture is of my breeding trio this year of a SC Black male with two RC Black females. Second photo is of one our young SC chicks who looks to have a very long back.

Great to see the progress Mike! I am impressed with the size and type of the male birds. Previous poster is correct in the observation of the females could be a little larger and I am sure Dan could help you out with a plan to do that. With that being said, they are still better than I would...

I wouldnt classify myself as an expert, I am just experienced haha. Dang, I am 42 and just got called an old timer. Crap. My point was that yes, if you consider yourself a "chicken" person and want to converse with others about chickens, try and use the correct nomenclature. I am patient and...

What is a "roo"? I know what a Cock or Cockerel is, but I dont know what a Roo is. Thanks for the pictures of the Minorca bantams, they are non-existant here in the US so it is nice to see some of them.

I think you have to worry about the size difference mostly. They type of a large Minorca is a lot deeper of body in my opinion. Yes a Rosecombed Blue Minorca would be nice to see....sly grin :)

We don't have Blue Minorcas here in the US.....yet! haha. There is a breeder working on Blue Minorcas as we speak and no its not me either. I have seen them and they are a work in progress but look very good so far.

As someone who has owned Minorcas from hatcheries, Sandhill and Exhibition birds I have to mention the disparity in size between all of them. Hatchery birds and Sandhill look the same to me with a little edge in size of males towards Sandhill birds. In comparison the exhibition birds I have...

You are probably going to be out of luck with the Sandhill birds. I have a pair of Blacks that came from Sandhill stock and my large Minorcas are twice their size. There are a few breeders out there with some Whites and one working on improving the Buffs. There are people out there working...

Frank has RC Black Minorcas, I talked to him the other day. They are Frank Zillich line, I am not sure of the heritage of my birds as to what line they might be. Could be a very good resource for all of us to bring in new blood to the RC's. John
